A device includes an optical gain medium through which optical radiation is amplified. The device includes first and second reflectors disposed around the gain medium. One of the reflectors includes an emission region though which optical output is emitted and a metallic structure that has an array of features that couple the radiation to at least one surface plasmon mode of the structure, thereby enhancing the device's output. The device may be a laser, e.g., a diode laser. The emission region may have a width of, for example, between 10 and 100 nanometers, and this emission region may be in the shape of a rectangular slit. The optical radiation in the gain medium may be advantageously polarized perpendicularly to an axis along which a longer dimension of the emission region is oriented. The device is useful for data recording, e.g., thermally assisted data recording.

A method and apparatus for generating a laser signal for driving a laser used in thermal-assisted recording. A channel of a hard drive generates a high-frequency component of the laser signal—e.g., a periodic wave or series of pulses—and synchronizes the phase of the laser signal with a corresponding write data signal which controls the magnetization of data bits within the magnetic disk of the hard drive. The channel may be connected to a read/write integrated circuit via a channel interconnect. The read/write circuit may include a second phase control to compensate for any phase shift and an adder circuit to combine the transmitted high-frequency laser with a DC bias. Further, the read/write circuit may include a feedback loop for adjusting the DC bias based on environmental parameters of the hard drive such as temperature.

A method and structure for a non-volatile magnetic random access memory (MRAM) device that has a stable magnetic electrode, an oxide layer adjacent the stable magnetic electrode, and a free magnetic electrode. The oxide layer is between the stable magnetic electrode and the free magnetic electrode. In the invention, a conductor is connected to a stable magnetic electrode. The oxide layer has a resistance at levels to allow sufficient power dissipation to lower the anisotropy of the free magnetic electrode through current induced heating. Current-induced heating is used in combination with spin-transfer torque or a magnetic field to switch the free magnetic electrode.

The magnetic media includes a thermal insulation layer structure formed near the substrate of the media provide more efficient heating of the write layer by allowing less heat dissipation to the substrate. The thermal insulation layer structure can be one or more layers of an oxide such as SiO2 and one or more layers of a material such as NiTa. Increasing the number of oxide layers and NiTa layers increases the thermal insulation of the thermal insulation layer structure thereby further increasing the efficiency of the heat assisted writing.
