    Abstract: A slim optical pickup apparatus which records/reads information from a recording medium includes a light source, an objective lens which focuses a beam incident from the light source on the recording medium, an optical device which is provided on an optical path between the light source and the objective lens, and converts the beam incident from the light source into a parallel beam, an optical axis shifting unit which is provided on an optical path between the optical device and the objective lens, and shifts an optical axis of the parallel beam passing through the optical device in parallel in a direction, a reflecting mirror which is provided on an optical path between the optical axis shifting unit and the objective lens, and reflects the parallel beam passing through the optical axis shifting unit toward the recording medium, and a photodetector which receives a beam reflected from the recording medium and passed through the optical axis shifting unit, and performs a photoelectric conversion. Use of the optical path shifting unit reduces the height of an optical pickup apparatus, thereby providing a slim optical pickup apparatus using an existing light source and photodetector of a conventional size.

    Abstract: An air-bearing slider for an optical disk drive for recording/reproducing information onto/from an optical disk while floating and moving at a predetermined height from the rotatably installed optical disk due to a dynamic air pressure is disclosed. The air-bearing slider includes a slider main body having an objective lens installation hole formed through the slider main body so that an objective lens can be installed, and an opening formed through the slider main body at one side portion of the objective lens installation hole, so that air flow flowing under the slider main body can flow out through the opening via the objective lens installation hole when the slider is floating as a result of dynamic air pressure.

    Abstract: A shutter opening apparatus and method for opening a shutter of a cartridge outside an optical disc recording and reproducing apparatus. The shutter opening apparatus includes an opening section mounted on a longitudinal opening of a tray for opening the shutter, a feeding section moved by the opening section for feeding the tray into an inner portion of the optical disc recording and reproducing apparatus, and a driving section for driving the opening section and the feeding section. The opening section includes a worm shaft rotatably mounted across the longitudinal opening, a first bevel gear rotated by the driving section and which is engaged with the worm shaft, and a bracket moved by the worm shaft for opening the shutter. The feeding section is movably installed on the tray and includes a slide bar moved between a first and second positions by the bracket, and a bias spring disposed between the try and the slide bar to bias the slide bar toward the first position. At one end of the slide bar, a rack to be engaged with the driving section is formed. The driving section includes a motor for generating a driving power, a second bevel gear rotated by the motor and engaged with the first bevel gear when the slide bar is at the second position, and a loading gear engaged with the rack when the slide bar is at the second position. The shutter of the cartridge is opened without failure outside the optical disc recording and reproducing apparatus, so the optical disc recording and reproducing device has a smaller size, and the loading errors of the disc are prevented.

    Abstract: A reflection type compound prism and an optical pickup apparatus employing the same. As a light beam is passed through the compound prism, a size of the light beam in a direction perpendicular to a reference plane is reduced by a first reflection surface, propagated toward an objective lens by second and third reflection surfaces and the size restored by reflecting the light beam from a fourth reflection surface forming an angle less than 45° with respect to the reference plane so that a height of an optical system is reducible to obtain a small thin optical pickup with a desired NA. The second and third reflection surfaces are spaced apart in a direction perpendicular to the reference plane by an amount close to a diameter of the light beam at a point of incidence of the light beam with the compound prism.

    Abstract: A magneto-optical head for magneto-optical writing and reading systems having an improved construction for a field modulating coil and a miniature objective lens, and a method of manufacturing the magneto-optical head. The turn table includes a lower drive member driven by the motor, and a positioning member mounted on the drive member. The positioning member includes a top surface on which the disc is mounted.
