A composition of particulate barium sulfate combined with one or more coreactants selected from the group consisting of a silicone free of amino groups, a long chain fatty alcohol and a long chain fatty acid amide has been found to be effective as a hair conditioner. The claimed compositions may also contain conventional surface-active agents, emulsifiers, stabilizers, and the like. In aqueous dispersion, these compositions impart improved body, manageability and style retention to hair.

The shampoo having no silicone possesses a high degree of style control properties. The shampoo containing silicone has a high degree of hair conditioning properties.

A fiber conditioning composition, which is preferably a shampoo for human hair, in stable and pearlescent liquid or semi-liquid or gel condition, is an emulsion or dispersion which includes a surfactant, a water insoluble fiber conditioning agent, a long chain saturated primary alcohol or derivative thereof, which stabilizes the emulsion or suspension and makes it pearlescent, and an aqueous medium, which may also contain other components of such fiber conditioning and shampoo compositions. In the preferred shampoos an anionic detergent is present, which is preferably a mixture of higher fatty alcohol sulfate and higher fatty alcohol ethoxylate sulfate, the long chain saturated primary alcohol (or derivative) is of an average of 30 to 40 carbon atoms (ethoxylated such alcohols may also be employed, at least in part) and the water insoluble conditioning agent is a silicone (very preferably a certain type of aminosilicone), a polyethylene, a paraffin, an isoparaffin, a microcrystalline wax, a C.sub.18-36(mixed) fatty acid or triglyceride, a higher fatty alcohol ester of a higher fatty acid (such as stearyl stearate), beeswax, or any mixture thereof, with the more preferred shampoos containing conditioning agents which include the aminosilicone in mixture with one or more of the polyethylene, microcrystalline wax, petrolatum, paraffin and isoparaffin, plus a cationic hair conditioning agent, which is preferably a quaternary ammonium salt. The disclosed invention also includes processes in which the compositions are used to condition or to clean and condition fibrous materials, such as human hair on the head.

A fiber conditioning composition, especially useful for conditioning human hair on the head, includes a cationic surface active fiber conditioning agent, such as a hair conditioning quanternary ammonium halide, a normally solid and water insoluble poly-lower alkylene, such as polyethylene, and a hydrocarbon solubilizer for such poly-lower alkylene, such as mineral oil, which liquefies it and makes it water dispersible in the presence of the cationic surface active fiber conditioning agent and water, which composition is of a significantly increased fiber conditioning effect compared to control compositions containing the cationic surface active fiber conditioning agent alone. In a preferred form the fiber conditioning composition includes water and anionic synthetic organic detergent, and is a shampoo for human hair.The invention also is of processes for conditioning fibrous materials, including shampooing of human hair and conditioning it so that wet combing, dry combing and manageability are improved and static charge thereon and objectionable "flyaway" are reduced. The invention also includes processes for manufacturing the invented fabric conditioning compositions and shampoos.

Hair is conditioned by applying to it a hair conditioning amide (a mononeoalkanoamide) of trialkylacetic acid (neoalkanoic acid), such as a monoamide of a mono-N-higher alk(en)yl amine and a trialkylacetic acid of 5 to 16 carbon atoms, or a polyamide of a trialkylacetic acid and a polyamine wherein the trialkylacetic acid moieties are of 1 to 10 carbon atoms in each of the alkyls thereof and each of the polyamine moieties contains from 2 to 5 amino groups. The hair conditioning trialkylacetamide is preferably applied to previously wet hair in aqueous solution, emulsion, dispersion or suspension, which is combed into the hair, after which the hair is rinsed with water, leaving on it a conditioning amount of the trialkylacetamide, which improves the condition of the hair by decreasing flyaway, increasing ease of wet combing, increasing ease of dry combing and/or increasing hair luster (especially compared to such luster when quaternary ammonium halide conditioning agents are used repeatedly). Although the conditioning agents of this invention are effective for the treatment of hair, deposit on the hair from aqueous media and are effective to condition the hair, they are removable from it by conventional shampooing, and therefore do not accumulate on the hair, as do quaternary ammonium salt conditioning agents, which accumulation is considered to be objectionable. Also, the present trialkylacetamides do not react with anionic detergent (as do quaternary ammonium halide conditioners), and therefore do not produce objectionable fatty deposits on the hair.

Liquid detergent compositions having good foaming and grease emulsification properties as well as reduced skin irritation effects which consist essentially of, by weight, 8% to 30% of a water-soluble C.sub.10 --C.sub.16 alkyl ether ethylenoxy sulfate salt containing an average of 5 to 12 moles of ethylene oxide in the molecule, a supplementary, water-soluble, non-soap, anionic detergent having in its molecular structure a C.sub.8 --C.sub.22 alkyl alkenyl or acyl group, and a sulfonate, sulfate or carboxylate group, the weight ratio of said alkyl ether sulfate to said supplementary detergent being in the range of 1:1 to 20:1; 1% to 8% of a zwitterionic detergent having the structural formula ##STR1## wherein R is a C.sub.8 --C.sub.18 alkyl or C.sub.8 --C.sub.18 alkanamido C.sub.2 --C.sub.3 alkyl group, R.sub.1 is a C.sub.1 --C.sub.3 alkyl, R.sub.2 is a C.sub.1 --C.sub.4 alkylene or hydroxyalkylene and X is S:O or C; 1% to 8% of an N--C.sub.8 --C.sub.18 alkonoic acid C.sub.2 --C.sub.3 alkanolamide, the weight ratio of said alkanolamide to said zwitterionic detergent being in the range of 1:4 to 4:1; and the balance being an aqueous medium comprising water and from 2% to 20% of a solubilizer selected from the group consisting of C.sub.2 --C.sub.3 alcohols, hydrotropes and mixtures thereof. Preferred compositions include, in addition, 2% to 10% by weight of an anti-gelling agent, such as a water-soluble formate. These compositions are characterized by good foaming, cleaning and skin mildness characteristics and are suitable for use as shampoos, dishwashing liquids, liquid soaps and foam baths.

A hair conditioning shampoo is described, which contains C.sub.6, C.sub.8 and/or C.sub.10 alkyl sulfate and/or C.sub.6, C.sub.8 and/or C.sub.10 alkyl lower alkoxylate sulfate as an anionic detergent component, a water insoluble conditioning agent(s) from the group of silicones (preferably a certain type of aminosilicone), polyethylenes, paraffins, isoparaffins, microcrystalline waxes, C.sub.18-36(mixed) fatty acids or such triglycerides, high fatty alcohol ester of a high fatty acid (such as stearyl stearate), beeswax, cationic conditioning agent, such as a quaternary ammonium or any mixture thereof, and a stabilizer for the shampoo, in water. Among adjuvants that may be present are lauric monoethanolamide, cocodiethanolamide, and hydroxyethyl cellulose, other thickeners and viscosity modifiers, pH adjusting agents, antioxidants perfumes and colorants. The presence of the C.sub.6, C.sub.8 and/or C.sub.10 alkyl sulfate and/or C.sub.6, C.sub.8 and/or C.sub.10 alkyl lower alkoxylated sulfate surprisingly improves conditioning of the hair, compared to shampoos containing other detergents that contain longer chain alkyl groups.
