摘要: Two printing-medium guide systems restrain the medium. One is in an area upstream (along the direction of medium advance) from the pen, and extending laterally across the width of the medium except in one or more regions laterally near the engagement of a print-medium advancing device. The other guide system is disposed laterally from the pen, and extends laterally across the medium only in one or more regions laterally near the engagement of the advancing device. Preferably these "one or more regions" are only near the lateral edges of the medium--so that (1) the first guide system restrains the medium over an area that stops short (ideally about 11/2 centimeter short) of the lateral edges; and (2) the second guide system is bifurcated, disposed laterally in two directions from the pen, and restrains the medium across only the lateral edges of the medium (most preferably in a strip whose width is a few millimeters, ideally 3 mm). Preferably a human-actuable control selects a print-medium width, and shifts at least one bifurcation of the second guide system. A tensioning system, longitudinally beyond the marking head from the medium advancing device, and generally aligned laterally with that device, tensions the medium away from the advancing device to hold the medium taut at the pen. Preferably the advancing and tensioning devices are very closely spaced upstream and downstream, respectively, from the pen zone. When tensioned, the medium moves a normal distance through the apparatus at each operation of the advancing device; but after a trailing edge of the medium passes the advancing device (so that the medium is advanced only by the tensioner and no longer tensioned), the advance distance is decreased (preferably by about half).

摘要: An ink-jet printer having improved print quality and full color printing capability on plain paper media. To accommodate placement of both input and output media trays on the same side of the printer housing for operator convenience, a paper path with a direction reversal is employed. A low cost radiant print heater with a reflector cavity heats the medium at the print area to increase the ink carrier evaporation rate. The printer provides improved medium control at the print area through an arrangement of small diameter drive and tension shafts and shortened handoff distance between the rollers. The heater is disposed between the drive and tension rollers. To minimize the handoff distance, portions of the drive rollers extend into the reflector cavity. The resulting media advancement mechanism has low inertia, with improved media positioning accuracy.

A method of detecting warranty violations further includes providing a mechanical component with a unique identifier and transmitting identifying data to diagnostic software that includes a log or marker capable of detecting and logging changes in the mechanical component. The method further includes transmitting the data identifying the change in the mechanical component via a network connection to warranty verification software. A computer system includes a processor coupled to a bus, at least one memory coupled to the bus, a plurality of input/output devices coupled to the bus, an operating system stored in memory, and a mechanical component encoded to identify an attribute of the mechanical component via the encoding. The computer system includes a system board including detection logic that provides the attribute to a configuration diagnostic system.

摘要: A method and apparatus for heating the print medium in a ink-jet printer to reduce printing defects in a relatively cold machine. The printer includes a print area heater which in a steady state condition for a given print medium is energized at a first heating level. Under cold start conditions, for an initial plot, the hater is overdriven at a second heating level. Under a multiple-pass printing mode, the hating drive is gradually reduced during an initial portion of the initial plot, until the first heating level is achieved. The heater drive level remains at the first heating level for subsequent plots in a given batch. For single-pass print modes, the heater drive level remains at the second level for the entire initial plot in a batch, and is reduced to the first level for subsequent plots. The printer has a preheater along the medium path, with an unheated area along the path between the print area and the preheater. To further improve print quality when printing along top leading edge margins, the paper is initially advanced until the leading edge is over the print area heater and left for a first time interval. The paper is then retracted to position the paper area initially located over the unheated area of the paper path during the first interval over the preheater. The paper is left in the retracted position during a second time interval, and then advanced to the print area to commence printing operations.

摘要: A backlash control system for a printer medium drive system having a motor-driven gear train for driving medium-engaging rollers. Pinion gears mounted on the motor drive shaft mesh with a main gear and a tension gear, mounted in turn on a main drive and a tension roller. An anti-backlash spring device includes pinch fingers which exert a pinch force on the main and tension gears. The pinch fingers are mounted at ends of a horizontal spring beam secured at an intermediate pivot point. As the motor turns to drive the print medium forward, the pinch force results in bowing of the horizontal beam, tending to exert a restoring force on the main and tension gears. As the motor direction is reversed and stopped, the restoring force results in the main and tension gears being pulled backwards to keep the gear teeth meshed tightly to the pinion gear teeth. The pinch fingers also exert a thrust load axially against the main drive and tension gears.

摘要: A chassis bushing assembly is provided. The chassis bushing assembly includes an outer disc and an inner disc. The outer disc includes a lip and has first face and a second face. The inner disc includes a shoulder and has a third face and a fourth face. In addition, the inner disc coaxially mates with the outer disc. The chassis bushing assembly further includes a first aperture extending through the first and second faces of the outer disc and a second aperture, coaxially located with respect to the first aperture, extending through the third and fourth faces of the inner disc. The chassis bushing assembly is symmetrical so that each chassis bushing location within a chassis utilizes the same chassis bushing assembly. In addition, the chassis bushing assembly is common across different chassis types and backwards compatibly with previous chassis designs.

摘要: An ink-jet printer having improved print quality and full color printing capability on plain paper media. To accommodate placement of both input and output media trays on the same side of the printer housing for operator convenience, a paper path with a direction reversal is employed. A paper preconditioning preheater with a curved surface and a multi-purpose paper path component accomplish the direction reversal. As the print medium is driven through the paper path, it contacts the preheater. The preheating dries and shrinks the paper to condition it for the printing operation. The preheater is a thin flexible film carrying heating elements, and is suspended in air, to provide extremely low thermal mass and eliminate the need for long warmup times. The preheater defines a first, hotter, preheating area adjacent the printing area, and a second, cooler, preheating area separated from the printing area by the first preheating area.
