A signaling procedure for establishing and terminating connections for small data transmissions (SDTs) by wireless devices. A wireless device sends an access request message to a serving wireless access node on a random access channel (RACH). The access request message includes an indication that the access is for a SDT. The access request message includes the amount of data that will be transmitted as part of the SDT. The wireless access node sends an assignment message to immediately assign radio resources to the wireless device without further signaling needed for the SDT to begin. When the wireless device begins the SDT, the first data block is coded and transmitted according to a first predetermined coding scheme. If there are any subsequent data blocks, the wireless device includes an information element in the header of the first data block to indicate the coding scheme for the subsequent data blocks.

It is presented methods and apparatuses for uplink resource utilization in a telecommunication system. The method comprises establishing a connection with a radio network node (2) and receiving threshold parameter sets (Thi) from the radio network node (2). Each threshold parameter set (Thi) comprising at least a minimum size limit (Si) associated with respective traffic class (i). The threshold parameter sets (Thi) are used to determine if the amount of data that the user equipment (4) has ready to transmit is large enough to be transmitted or if it has been waiting long enough to be transmitted. If it is the UE (4) transmits the data to the radio network node (2). To access a network, an MTC device sends a channel request message to the network over a random access channel. The channel request message includes a device type indication and a resource type indication. The device type indication may for example, indicate to the network that the requesting device is an MTC device or non-MTC device. Upon receipt of the channel request, the receiving network node can determine on the basis of the device type indication and resource type indication whether to grant or deny the access attempt, and to determine what resources to grant. The channel request message may further include a call duration indication in the channel request message if CS resources are requested for a voice call or a priority indication if CS resources are requested for a data transmission.

The transmission/reception of lower priority data blocks containing data segments of a first higher layer packet is interrupted to transmit/receive higher priority data blocks containing data segments of a second higher layer packet. After the transmission/reception of a final segment of the second higher layer packet, the transmission/reception of the first higher layer packet is resumed. In some embodiments, a final segment of the second higher layer packet is encapsulated in a final higher priority data block with a remaining data segment of the first higher layer packet. The final higher priority data block further includes a transition indicator to indicate a transition from the second higher layer packet back to the first higher layer packet.
