    摘要: Specific methods of inducing high nucleation rates in thermoplastics, such as polyolefins, and particularly, though not necessarily, polypropylenes, through the introduction of two different compounds that are substantially soluble within the target molten thermoplastic resin (such as, as one non-limiting example, an added compound including at least one acid group and an added organic salt) are provided. Such introduced components react to form a nucleating agent in situ within such a target molten thermoplastic resin which is then allowed to cool. Preferably, one compound is an acid, preferably bicyclic (i.e., two cyclic systems sharing at least three carbon atoms) or monocycloaliphatic (i.e., a single, saturated ring system) in nature, such as, without limitation, bicyclo[2.2.1]heptane dicarboxylic acid or hexahydrophthalic acid, and the other compound is an organic salt, such as a carboxylate, sulfonate, phosphate, oxalate, and the like, and more preferably selected from the group consisting of metal C8-C22 esters. Such a production method thus provides a manner of generating in situ the desired nucleating agent through reaction of such soluble compounds. Kits (e.g., masterbatch methods, for example) comprising such components for easy introduction within target molten polyolefin resins are also contemplated within this invention.

    摘要: Thermoplastic articles may be manufactured having a high degree of visual appeal to consumers. Clarifying agents may be employed as additives in such thermoplastic articles to produce high clarity articles. A coloring agent may be mixed with clarifying agents to form a first blend, and then such a first blend may be applied in very low loadings to form a clarified polymeric article. It is possible to achieve an observable visual benefit while using very low loadings of coloring agent in a polyolefin, such as polypropylene. Carbon black is a pigment that may provide such observable benefits in polypropylene.

    摘要: A specific combination of two different polyolefin clarifying and nucleating agents, namely 3,4-dimethyldibenzylidene sorbitol and p-methyldibenzylidene sorbitol is provided. Such a combination surprisingly provides improved clarification and crystallization temperatures to polypropylene articles and formulations, better than bis-p-methyldibenzylidene sorbitol alone and equivalent or better than 3,4-dimethyldibenzylidene sorbitol. Such a combination of compounds thus permits the utilization of a new additive for the purpose of modifying polyolefin properties, such as polypropylene clarification and nucleation. The inventive combination may be introduced within any polyolefin composition, again preferably polypropylene, which may then be molded into any shape or form. A method of producing a polyolefin plastic utilizing the inventive combination of compounds is also provided.

A molded article formed from such a composition at a thickness of 0.125 inches will have a haze of less than about 50% and an instrumented impact toughness of at least 100 inch-lbs at −20° C. to −30° C.

    摘要: A specific combination of two different polyolefin clarifying and nucleating agents, namely 3,4-dimethyldibenzylidene sorbitol and p-methyldibenzylidene sorbitol is provided.
