The elastic cord tensioning and length adjusting apparatus is designed to allow the user to have much more flexibility with a single length elastic cord, rather than using a number of cords of different lengths. The apparatus can adjust, both the tension and length of elastic cords, by allowing the user to loop different lengths of the cord in a mechanism that can lock the looped section of elastic cord so that the length of the cord not in the loop is shortened and the tension is increased. The apparatus comprises a main horizontal body having two apertures designed for the cord to pass through. A locking mechanism fits into a center aperture in the main horizontal body and has two end notches to allow the elastic cord to fit into those notches. A spring tensioning device and a retaining piece maintain the lock in position.

The heating and cooling system further comprises a first motorized damper having connection means for receiving at least a low voltage heating activation signal from the thermostat, the first motorized damper being installed in each lower level return duct and configured to drive the damper to an open position when the connection means receives a low voltage heating activation signal, wherein the first motorized damper is operatively closed when the thermostat alternatively transmits a low voltage cooling activation signal such that the cooling system substantially receives no air flow through each lower level return air duct and effectively receives only air flow from the upper level of the space.

The apparatus includes a shock absorber having a pressure cylinder which forms a working chamber having first and second portions operable to store damping fluid. The apparatus further includes a piston assembly disposed in the pressure cylinder and having a valve body forming first and second flow passage for providing fluid communication between the first and second portions of the working chamber. The valve body forming first and second annular recesses adjacent the first and second portions, respectively, of the working chamber. The apparatus further including a first unloader disposed within the first annular recess and which is operable for controlling the flow of damping fluid through the first flow passage from the second portion to the first portion of the working chamber during compression. The first unloader is adapted to regulate the flow of fluid through the first flow passage in response to pressure acting on a first valve member within the first recess. In addition, a second unloader is provided for controlling the flow of damping fluid thorugh the second flow passage from the first portion to the second portion of the working chamber during rebound. The second unloader is disposed in the second annular recess and is operable for regulating the flow of damping fluid through the second flow passage in response to pressure of the damping fluid acting on a second valve member within the second annular recess. A first flow path fluidly interconnects the first and second annular recesses. An electrically controlled solenoid is disposed within the first flow path and is operable for regulating the flow of damping fluid therein between the first and second annular recesses. The solenoid includes a plunger moveable between a first and second position for generating firm damping during compression and rebound by inhibiting the flow of fluid through the first flow path when the plunger is in the first position.

The environmental control load may include a heating system such as a heat pump or a millivolt heating system, although the thermostat and its method of operation could also be employed with cooling systems, or heating and cooling systems. The controlled load may be one that has a "lockout" mode to prevent activation when a problem is detected, such as a reduction in gas pressure. The temperature sensor detects whether, for example, a request for heat issued by the controller has been satisfied, or alternately, if the ambient temperature has risen within some period of time, usually about two hours. If the ambient temperature has not satisfied this condition within two hours, the environmental control load is turned off, and then on, to recycle and overcome the lockout condition, if the load is resettable and the condition causing the lockout has passed. This resetting may occur only once, or may be repeated after another period of time, with the repetitions optionally being limited in number. The thermostat can safely be used without noticeable degradation in service even with nonrecyclable systems.
