An apparatus and method for removing biopsy specimens from spring based spring based multiple biopsy or forceps biopsy devices by irrigating or suctioning. The apparatus collects, fixes and prepares specimens for histopathologic processing limiting manual labor, workplace risk and time previously required. After removal from the biopsy device, specimens are fixed in a histopathological processing cassette or on specimen wrapping paper for transportation to the pathology laboratory. In pathology, fixative is drained and specimens inspected for gross description followed by paper wrapping and histopathological processing with minimum handling, exposure to infectious material or toxic fixatives. After removing the biopsy specimens, the biopsy device is washed in the apparatus to eliminate contaminants and removed, ready for another biopsy sequence. A spring based spring based multiple biopsy device using these methods can collect numerous biopsy batches from different sites with segregated processing and analysis of each batch.

An apparatus for removing biopsies from spring based multiple biopsy storage cylinders for analysis. The storage cylinders and spring based biopsy mechanism permit 360 degree biopsy mechanism rotation and increase the number and diameter of biopsies stored. Additional storage cylinder improvements allow closed storage cylinder opening for removing internal plastic cylinders or biopsies before fixing, thereby leaving the same multiple biopsy instrument available for additional biopsies on the same patient. The improvements allow for removing the surrounding biopsy mechanism and biopsies from closed storage cylinders after actuator removal and histopathological processing of biopsies to paraffin embedding. Additionally apparatuses, tools and methods are described for simultaneously separating numerous actuators from storage cylinders and removing numerous paraffin embedded biopsies from storage cylinders and surrounding biopsy mechanisms for histopathological slide fabrication.

The actuator may be a spring(s), gear(s), electrical solenoid or motor, air or hydraulic pressure activated piston or a combination thereof. Automated action may be initiated by a voice, hand or foot operated switch. The actuator may be disposable, attached to or separable from the end effector or permanently attached to be reusable. The actuator and end effector may be disposable, attached to or separable from the endoscope or permanently attached to be reusable. The automated device may be incorporated into an endoscope or attached to the outside.
