摘要:
Incorporation of fluorine into a porous silica body, such as an unsintered body produced by a sol-gel method, by VAD or OVPO, reduces or eliminates bubble or pore formation upon re-heating of the glass formed by sintering of the porous material. Effective fluorine concentrations are between 0.01 and 5% by weight. The invention can be used advantageously in producing preforms and optical fiber.

High-silica glasses are formed by sintering a dried gel at temperatures below the liquidus. The gel may be formed by mixing colloidal silica particles or silica-containing liquids with appropriate liquids. Fragmentation of the gel during drying is advantageously avoided by redispersing the dried gel or sol in a liquid to yield a colloidal suspension which is then gelled, dried, and finally sintered below the liquidus.

The disclosed method of making a glass body by a sol/gel process comprises electrochemically assisted release of the gel body from the mold in which the body was formed. More specifically, the method involves gelation of a sol in a mold that comprises a first conductor member, with a second conductor member also being in contact with the sol and/or gel, and causing the flow of a current between the first and second conductor members, with the first member being the cathode. In consequence of the current flow a substantially liquid lubricating layer that facilitates removal of the gel body from the melt exists at the cathode/gel interface.

The inventive optical fiber connector comprises a glass ferrule that is strengthened by etching of the outer surface of the ferrule, followed by deposition thereon of a protective layer. Exemplarily, the ferrule is a vitreous silica ferrule drawn from a preform that was made by a sol-gel process. The ferrule is etched in buffered HF, and the protective layer is electroless deposited Ni, with a thin layer of Au thereon. Significant strength increases, exceeding 200%, are obtainable, with the strength being relatively unchanged after even a severe abrasion test.

Cracking in thin sheets of sol-gel-produced material is avoided by use of a support liquid during gelation and drying. Silica glass, as well as other glass and ceramic bodies, is contemplated.

The specification describes techniques for chemically machining extruded glass preforms used to draw glass ferrules for optical fiber connectors. Using the chemical machining technique the dimensions of the preform, including OD, ID, and the OD to ID ratio can be adjusted so that the dimensions of drawn ferrules meet strict dimensional standards. The technique is especially useful for adjusting the dimensions of extruded preforms that have an inherent bow along in the length of the preform. The technique allows adjustment in dimensions while preserving a desired OD to ID ratio. Also described are techniques for reducing eccentricity and/or ellipticity of hollow bore glass preforms.

Relatively large bodies of low-alkali silicate and other glass can be prepared conveniently by a particulate sol-gel process. The glass comprises at least 85 mole % SiO.sub.2, 1-12 mole % oxide of one or more of Li, Na, K, Rb, Cs, Ti and Zr, 0-6 mole % of oxide of Al, and optionally at most 2.5 mole % of oxide of elements other than Si, Li, Na, K, Rb, Cs, Ti, Zr and Al. The process comprises forming particles from a first sol that comprises Si and one or more of Li, Na, K, Rb, Cs, Ti and Zr, and optionally additionally comprises Al. The process further comprises forming a second sol by dispersing the particles in an aqueous liquid, gelling the second sol, and heat treating the resulting gel body such that the glass results.

The specification describes processes for the manufacture of glass ferrules for optical fiber connectors wherein the glass ferrules have a composition comprising silicon oxide, alkali metal oxide, and aluminum oxide to which is added 1-35% of lead oxide.
摘要:
The improvement of the performance of holographic glasses with recorded holograms as measured by a figure of merit of the holographic glasses is disclosed. The improvement in the figure of merit of the holographic glasses is obtained at least in part with the addition of arsenic in the formation of the holographic glasses. The presence of arsenic increases the figure of merit as measured at a wavelength of interest of a holographic glass with a recorded hologram as compared to a holographic glass with a recorded hologram that does not contain arsenic.
