Abstract:
A system for controlling power usage in a storage cluster by dynamically controlling membership in the storage cluster is disclosed. The storage cluster includes multiple storage servers that provide access to one or more storage subsystems. The power management system uses a power management policy to set parameters for controlling membership in the storage cluster and monitors the storage cluster based on the policy. Based on the monitoring, the system detects when the number of storage servers in the storage cluster should be reduced or increased. To reduce the number, the system selects a storage server to deactivate and directs the selected storage server to migrate storage resources (e.g. data, metadata) associated with the server to a different storage server. The system then deactivates the selected storage server by directing it to transition to a low power mode. The system may increase the number of servers in the storage cluster by reversing these steps.
Abstract:
A method for provisioning a blade server is provided. The method includes creating a server boot image for a blade server, where the boot image includes an operating system image created from a donor server. Then, the method includes inserting the blade server into a chassis of an enclosure that is capable of receiving multiple blade servers. Then, staring the blade server from a pre-boot execution environment (PXE). The PXE loading an image that prompts a user to install a new operating system from a pre-existing target computer of the enclosure. The method then installs the new operating system. The installing includes creation of a new iSCSI target for the inserted blade server, and partitioning of the iSCSI target. The also includes restarting the inserted blade server. The restarting is configured to boot using the iSCSI target of the inserted blade server, so that the inserted blade server becomes a provisioned blade server. The provisioning is accomplished without a hardware iSCSI initiator for an iSCSI boot.
Abstract:
A method for accessing data in a storage area network is provided. The method initiates with receiving a request for a list of targets on the storage area network. All the targets on the storage area network are exposed to the requester and authentication requiring a password is requested from the requester to grant access to the targets on the storage are network. Access to the targets is granted if the password is acceptable, and access to the targets is refused if the password is unacceptable.
Abstract:
A computer-implemented method of automatically configuring a platform of storage devices includes querying components of the platform to gather information about the capability of the platform, locating one or more storage devices within the platform, automatically determining one or more RAID levels that are supported by the platform, and automatically configuring one or more storage devices within the platform as a RAID system having a particular RAID level, where the particular RAID level is selected based on the capability of the platform.
Abstract:
A method of rebuilding a replacement drive used in a RAID group of drives is disclosed. The rebuilding method includes tracking data modification operations continuously during use of the drives. The method also includes saving the tracked data modifications to a log in a persistent storage, where the tracked data modifications are associated with stripe data present on the drives. Then, rebuilding a failed one of the drives with a replacement drive. The rebuilding is facilitated by referencing the log from the persistent storage, and the log facilitating reading only portions of stripe data from surviving drives and omitting reading of portions from the drives where no data was written. Thus, the rebuilding only rebuilds the stripe data to the replacement drive. Also provided is a zoning method, which enables logical zone creation from storage area networks.
