This invention is a process for making modified silica filler comprising the steps of: (A) contacting an acidic aqueous suspension of precipitated or colloidal silica, optionally in the presence of a surfactant and/or a water-miscible solvent, with a combination of (a) a functionalizing coupling agent, and (b) an organometallic hydrophobing compound in a weight ratio of (a) to (b) of at least 0.001 to 1 to form an acidic aqueous suspension of chemically treated silica filler having a pH of 2.0 or less (B) treating the acidic aqueous suspension of the chemically treated filler with an acid-neutralizing agent to increase the pH of the suspension to a range of from greater than 2.0 to 10, and (C) recovering the chemically treated filler. This invention is also modified silica filler that has a pH of from about 5.0 to 10.0, where the silica filler is made by the method of this invention. This invention is also a curable silicone elastomer composition comprising a polyorganosiloxane, the modified silica filler produced by the method of this invention, and a means of curing the polyorganosiloxane into an elastomer.

Silica surfaces are contacted with compositions containing organosilicon compounds to prepare modified silica fillers. The compositions contain only organosilicon compounds which are monomeric dichlorosilanes and trialkoxysilanes. The treating compositions may be (i) mixtures or blends of dialkyldichlorosilanes, and trialkoxysilanes free of hydrocarbon or organofunctional groups reactive with silica surfaces, or (ii) mixtures or blends of substituted dialkyldichlorosilanes in which the substituted dialkyldichlorosilanes are free of hydrocarbon or organofunctional groups reactive with silica surfaces, and trialkoxysilanes free of hydrocarbon or organofunctional groups reactive with silica surfaces. These mixtures and blends contain dialkyldichlorosilanes and trialkoxysilanes in a weight ratio of 1:0.1 to 1:2, respectively.

In a first embodiment of a process for making mercaptoalkylalkoxysilanes, a pH adjusting agent and a sulfide containing compound are mixed in an aqueous phase to provide a pH of 4-9, a phase transfer catalyst is added to the aqueous phase, a haloalkylalkoxysilane is then added to the aqueous phase to form a reaction mixture containing mercaptoalkylalkoxysilanes and water soluble byproducts, and the desired mercaptoalklyalkoxysilanes are separated from the water soluble byproducts. In an alternate embodiment, the haloalkylalkoxysilane, the phase transfer catalyst, and an anhydrous pH adjusting agent such as sulfur dioxide, carbon dioxide, hydrogen sulfide, phosphoric acid, boric acid, and hydrochloric acid, are mixed, then an aqueous solution of a sulfide containing compound is added to form a reaction mixture containing mercaptoalkylalkoxysilanes and water soluble byproducts, and desired mercaptoalklyalkoxysilanes are separated from water soluble byproducts.
