The intersecting ribs are oriented non-perpendicularly with respect to each other and define non-rectangular openings. The window also includes a support frame around a perimeter of the plurality of intersecting ribs, and a film disposed over and spanning the plurality of intersecting ribs and openings. The film is configured to pass radiation therethrough. An associated radiation detection system includes a sensor disposed behind the window. The sensor is configured to detect radiation passing through the high strength window.

    摘要: A high strength window for a radiation detection system has a plurality of ribs comprising diamond material. The plurality of ribs defines a grid having openings therein. The tops of the ribs terminate generally in a common plane and the height of the ribs is sufficiently thin to allow some radiation to pass directly through the diamond material of the ribs. The high strength window also has a support frame around a perimeter of the grid. A layer of thin polymer film material is disposed over and spans the plurality of ribs and openings to pass radiation therethrough. A radiation detection system comprises a high strength window as described above and a sensor behind the window. The sensor is configured to detect radiation that passes thought the window.

    摘要: An optical data storage system includes a laser diode to produce at least one light beam. An inorganic, dielectric grid polarizing beam splitter is disposable in the light beam to transmit a polarized light beam, and includes a stack of film layers disposed over a substrate. Each film layer is formed of a material that is both inorganic and dielectric. Adjacent film layers have different refractive indices. At least one of the film layers is discontinuous to form a form birefringent layer with an array of parallel ribs with a pitch of less than 390 nm. A drive carries a disc medium disposed in the polarized light beam to reflect a modified light beam. The grid polarizer is disposable in the modified light beam to separate the modified light beam into a reflected beam and a transmitted beam. A photo-detector is disposable in the reflected or transmitted beam.

A region having a lower refractive index than the refractive index of the substrate is disposed between the elements and the substrate to reduce the longest wavelength at which resonance occurs. The region may comprise a plurality of ribs extending from the substrate and supporting the elements. The ribs may be formed by etching slots into the substrate using the elements as a mask. The region may also comprise at least one layer of dielectric film. In addition the region may be comprise ribs extending from the surface, each having at least one layer of dielectric film disposed thereon.

    摘要: A radiation detector window structure for use with a radiation detection system includes a frame, a plurality of upstanding spaced-apart ribs held in place by the frame, where the tops of the ribs terminate generally in common plane, and a thin film of material disposed on the tops of the ribs to span over the gaps therebetween for passing the radiation to be detected and for filtering at least some of the unwanted radiation. The tops of the ribs are smoothed and rounded to minimize a chance of piercing the film placed thereover. The ribs are spaced to provide sufficient support for the film so that the thickness of the film may be reduced to better transmit desired radiation.
