A flame retardant thermoplastic composition is provided containing a vinyl aromatic resin and a flame retardant. The flame retardant is an oligomeric condensation product of a halogenated aromatic diol and an alkylene dihalide composition which is preferably an admixture of an alkyl monohalide and an alkylene dihalide. The compositions are useful for making molded articles for automotive parts and for business machine housings. The composition exhibit no bloom, good thermal color stability, and good resistance to ultraviolet light.

A method for providing aqueous solutions of HOBr or HOCl which includes adding bleach (NaOCl) to a solution of HBr or HCl until an identified absorbance or color change in the resulting solution is detected. Dialkylhydantoins are optionally added to the resulting solution to suppress the formation of halate ions. The method provides a simple and reliable method for producing accurately defined solutions of hypohalous acids, which are useful in a variety of ways, including for disinfecting, cleaning, and odor control purposes.

A method for the controlled delivery of a fracturing fluid to a well bore comprises formulating an aqueous base fluid such that it meets or exhibits desired physical and chemical characteristics for an optimal fracturing fluid. The formulation of the aqueous base fluid max involve commingling one or more sources of waste water with a source of fresh water followed by controlled injection of one or more additives. This process is substantially completed prior to delivering the aqueous base fluid to the well site. This allows the delivery of an optimal volume of the aqueous base fluid with homogeneously blended additives to the well bore.

A process for the solventless polymerization of brominated styrenes includes blending monomers of brominated styrenes with a polymerization initiator, feeding the monomer/polymerization initiator mix into a prepolymerizer wherein the monomers begin to polymerize, and feeding the monomer/polymerization initiator mix and the partially polymerized bromostyrene into a screw-type extruder to drive the polymerization to a high degree of completion in a short period of time. Optionally, the monomers may be preheated before mixing with the initiator, or a heater may be included in the prepolymerizer.
