Described are polypropylene molding compositions which have surprisingly good physical properties in combination with flame retardancy, which include copolymers represented by the formula: ##STR1## wherein n is >1, P is isotactic or syndiotactic polypropylene, and S is a grafted side chain having brominated monomeric units of the formula: ##STR2## wherein x=1 to 4, R.sub.1 is H or CH.sub.3, and R.sub.2 is H or a C.sub.1-4 lower alkyl group. Polymer blends including such graft copolymers and methods for making such flame retardant polymer compositions are also described.

A flame-retarded polyolefin fiber made of a thermoplastic polyolefin and a graft copolymer composition represented by tile formula: ##STR1## in which PP is polypropylene, and S represents grafted side chains having halogenated monomeric units of the formula: ##STR2## wherein x=1 to 4, R.sub.8 is H or CH.sub.3, R.sub.9 is H or a C.sub.1-4 alkyl group, and R.sub.10 is Br or Cl. The compositions may also include homopolymers of the styrene monomer or equivalents, as well as non-halogenated atactic polypropylene. Tackifying agents, waxes, anti-oxidants and other additives may also be included.

A process for the solventless polymerization of brominated styrenes includes blending monomers of brominated styrenes with a polymerization initiator, feeding the monomer/polymerization initiator mix into a prepolymerizer wherein the monomers begin to polymerize, and feeding the monomer/polymerization initiator mix and the partially polymerized bromostyrene into a screw-type extruder to drive the polymerization to a high degree of completion in a short period of time. Optionally, the monomers may be preheated before mixing with the initiator, or a heater may be included in the prepolymerizer.

A flame retarding additive composition, useful in thermoplastic polyolefins, is disclosed comprising a mixture of a halogenated bisphenol derivative and the copolymer of a halogenated vinyl aromatic grafted onto polyolefin. The preferred bisphenol derivative is tetrabromobisphenol A bis(dibromopropyl ether), and the preferred graft copolymer comprises bromostyrene grafted onto isotactic or syndiotactic polypropylene. Also disclosed are the flame retarded, thermoplastic polyolefins prepared using the foregoing additive compositions.

A method of producing decabromodiphenyl alkanes includes the steps of charging a reaction vessel with bromine and a bromination catalyst and introducing a diphenyl alkane into the vessel at a location above the level of the charge bromine and catalyst. A dip tube apparatus for introducing the diphenyl alkane includes an inner tube and an outer tube, each of which are disposed above the surface of the bromine reaction vessel. The inner tube is fitted with a plug having an opening. Diphenyl alkane flows through the inner tube, out the opening in the plug, and into the reactor. The outer tube is disposed around and along the inner tube. Reaction mass from the vessel is recirculated from the vessel, through the outer tube and back to the vessel so as to form a curtain of reaction mass around the stream of diphenyl alkane being simultaneously fed into the reaction vessel.
