A power management architecture for an electrical power distribution system, or portion thereof, is disclosed. The architecture includes multiple intelligent electronic devices (“IED's”) distributed throughout the power distribution system to manage the flow and consumption of power from the system using real time communications. Power management application software and/or hardware components operate on the IED's and the back-end servers and inter-operate via the network to implement a power management application. The architecture provides a scalable and cost effective framework of hardware and software upon which such power management applications can operate to manage the distribution and consumption of electrical power by one or more utilities/suppliers and/or customers which provide and utilize the power distribution system. Autonomous communication on the network between IED's, back-end servers and other entities coupled with secure networks, themselves interconnected, via firewalls, by one or more unsecure networks, is facilitated by the use of a back-channel protocol. The back-channel protocol allows a device coupled with a secure network to solicit communications from a device on the unsecure network, thereby opening a back-channel through the firewall through which the unsecure network device may send unsolicited messages to the secure network device. Communications between multiple secure networks is accomplished using a unsecure device on an intermediary unsecure network to relay communications between the secure network devices using the protocol described above.

Objects within such individual monitoring units include modules which perform a function and registers which contain the inputs, outputs and setup information for the modules. Methods can be invoked on all objects to change or query the operation or configuration of the device. At least one of the modules receives the digital signal as an input and uses the signal to generate measured parameters. Additional modules take measured parameters as input and generate additional parameters therefrom. The module may be linked in an arbitrary manner to form arbitrary functional blocks.

A sensor apparatus for monitoring voltage and/or current in an electric circuit and a system for monitoring voltages and currents in a system wherein electricity is distributed in a plurality of circuits. A sensor apparatus is associated with each phase conductor in each of the circuits. The sensor apparatus senses the electricity in the phase conductor and provides a digital output that is representative of the sensed electricity in the phase conductor. The digital output preferably includes phasor data for the sensed phase conductor. The monitoring system includes a plurality of such sensor apparatuses. The plurality of sensor apparatuses are coupled to a digital data network that provides for the exchange of sensed data among nodes on the digital data network. On a node of the network, phasor data from some of the plurality of sensor apparatuses are summed or otherwise processed to obtain phasor data representative of a plurality of the circuits.

The ports are coupled with the network, wherein each device engages in multiple substantially simultaneous communications from the ports, and whereby one of the devices communicates with another device over the network.

A phasor monitoring system and apparatus for use with a distribution system for electricity wherein periodic three phase electricity is distributed in a plurality of circuits. The phasor monitoring apparatus comprises a phasor transducer that has an input that receives analog signals representative of parameters of electricity in a circuit of the distribution system, an analog to digital converter that receives the analog signals and outputs a digital data signal representative of the analog signals, a processor coupled to the analog to digital converter to receive the digital data signal output from the analog to digital converter, programming on the processor that computes phasor data representative of the electricity in the circuit based on the digital data received from the analog to digital converter and provides a digital output representative of the phasor data, and a network-compatible port coupled to the processor to transmit the phasor data onto a data network coupled thereto. The phasor monitoring system comprises a data network interconnecting a plurality of phasor transducers each associated with one of the circuits of an electricity distribution system. A phasor array processor is connected to the data network and receives phasor data from a plurality of the phasor transducers connected to the network. The phasor array processor computes combined phasor data for the plurality based upon the phasor data received from the plurality of phasor transducers.
