Methods and apparatus for transmitter identification in a wireless network are disclosed. In an example, a method is provided that encodes pilot information on a first portion of a number of subcarriers in a symbol within a pilot positioning channel for an active transmitter. The method further includes encoding transmitter identification information on a second dedicated portion of the number of subcarriers of the symbol. The method also encompasses including a transmitter allocation field that signals the number of succeeding symbols that will be used by the transmitter for transmitting any other information in an interference free manner. In another example, a method is provided that receives a symbol having a number of subcarriers from a transmitter. A channel estimate and an energy measurement of the symbol using a first portion of the subcarriers. A dedicated second portion of the number of subcarriers in the symbol are then decoded to determine the transmitter identification information.

Pilot transmission and channel estimation techniques for an OFDM system with excess delay spread are described. To mitigate the deleterious effects of excess delay spread, time filtering is utilized. Time filtering is utilized to combat excess delay spread effects in channel estimation. The time filtering is performed in the presence of staggered pilots and helps in improving the channel estimate in the presence of excess delay spread.

In an aspect, a method includes setting a threshold value, and comparing a channel estimate to the threshold value to determine an interference estimate (Iest). The method also includes averaging the interference estimate (Iest) to determine average channel interference (Ic), and determining interference energy (I) based on the interference estimate (Iest) and the average channel interference (Ic). In another aspect, an apparatus includes threshold logic configured to set a threshold value and compare a channel estimate to the threshold value to determine an interference estimate (Iest). The apparatus includes averaging logic configured to average the interference estimate (Iest) to determine average channel interference (Ic), and summing logic configured to determine interference energy (I) based on the interference estimate (Iest) and average channel interference (Ic).
