A process for flocculating filler particles in water is provided. The process comprises adding a flocculant to a mixture comprising filler particles and water, wherein the flocculant has a reduced specific viscosity (“RSV”) of from about 5 dL/g to about 16 dL/g, a viscosity average molecular weight of from about 1,200,000 to about 7,500,000, and a cationic charge of from about 5 mol % to about 50 mol %. Flocs formed by flocculation of the filler particles and the flocculant have a median particle size of from about 10 μm to about 150 μm. The filler is not precipitated calcium carbonate alone. The flocs provided by the process are useful in increasing ash content of a paper product.

The method comprises treating a paper sheet precursor with a polyaluminum salt, and a strengthening agent, wherein the strengthening agent comprises a dialdehyde-modified polyacrylamide copolymer and a polyacrylamide copolymer. The polyaluminum salt may be polyaluminum chloride. The methods have been demonstrated to provide, among other things, improvements in retention, strength, and dewatering.

Disclosed are an oil-in-water emulsion defoamer and a method for preparing the defoamer. The defoamer may have a dispersed oil phase with a droplet size of 4 to 8 μm, and a viscosity of 100 to 1000 cP, and is widely used for defoaming in paper coating and wet-end in a paper mill. A method for preparing an oil-in-water emulsion defoamer is also provided. The method may include adding an emulsifying agent to biodiesel, and mixing, then gradually adding hydrophobic fumed silica to obtain a first mixture. The method may also include gradually adding water and a non-ionic surfactant, and stirring until uniform to obtain a second mixture. The method may also include gradually adding the first mixture to the second mixture, and stirring until uniform, to obtain an oil-in-water emulsion defoamer.

The invention provides a dialdehyde modified acrylamide type polymer for paper making, which is obtained by reacting a dialdehyde with an acrylamide type base polymer, wherein the acrylamide type base polymer is formed by copolymerization of an acrylamide type monomer, a cationic monomer and/or an anionic monomer and a cross linking agent. The invention further provides a method for preparing said dialdehyde modified acrylamide type polymer. The dialdehyde modified acrylamide type polymer according to the invention has improved stability while maintains excellent enhanced performance.

The paper-making composition comprises an anionic dialdehyde-modified polyacrylamide and a polyamide polyamine-epichlorohydrin (“PAE”) resin present in the paper-making aid composition at a weight ratio of PAE resin to anionic dialdehyde-modified polyacrylamide of from about 5:1 to about 1:1.6. The processes utilize an anionic dialdehyde-modified polyacrylamide and PAE resin at certain ratios. The anionic dialdehyde-modified polyacrylamide and PAE resin may be added to the pulp slurry as a composition or separately.

An on-line control and reaction process for pH adjustment and a control device for automatically adjusting pH value are provided. The process includes mixing a first enhancer and a second enhancer, optionally after diluting the first enhancer and/or the second enhancer with water, to form a mixture, setting a base pH value (δ1) and a target pH value (δ2), and adding pH adjuster into the mixture via a pH control unit and mixing to obtain a product with the target pH value. The pH control unit adjusts the adding of the pH adjuster by measuring or inputting certain parameters.
