Polyacrylate esters with long-chain alkoxylated hydrocarbonoxy groups are disclosed which can be obtained by the transesterification of polyacrylate esters with polyoxyalkylene monools, wherein the polyacrylate esters, up to 50% of which can be replaced by the corresponding methacrylate esters, have been obtained by free radical polymerization and wherein the polyoxyalkylene monools have the average formulaR.sup.1 O(C.sub.n H.sub.2n O--).sub.x HwhereinR.sup.1 is an alkyl, alkenyl or alkylphenyl group,n has an absolute value of 2, 3 or 4 and an average value of 2.0 to 2.5 andx is 10 to 200.The compounds, which can be used as emulsifiers, solubilizers and for thickening aqueous solutions which contain anionic surfactants, particularly in cosmetics and for personal grooming, are distinguished by a content of low molecular weight components, which is smaller compared to that of products obtained by copolymerization.

Polyacrylate esters with long-chain hydrocarbon and polyoxyalkylene groups are disclosed, which are prepared by transesterification of polyacrylate alkyl esters, the alkyl groups of which have 1 to 4 carbon atoms and which were obtained by free radical polymerization, wherein the transesterification is carried out with a mixture of selected alcohols and polyoxyalkylene monools. Compared to products obtained by copolymerization, the transesterification products are largely free of undesirable low molecular weight components, have a narrow molecular weight distribution and exhibit excellent surfactant properties. They are useful especially as W/O emulsifiers for natural and synthetic oils.

The esters are obtained by transesterifying alkyl polyacrylate esters with a mixture of dialkylaminoalkanols and saturated or unsaturated aliphatic alcohols with 8 to 22 carbon atoms, followed by quaternization.The polymers are free of physiologically questionable components and can therefore be used for the preparation of cosmetic products, preferably for hair cosmetics. The polymers furthermore are suitable for finishing fibers or of textile products.The invention is furthermore directed to polyacrylate esters with tertiary amino groups, which are formed as intermediates in the preparation of polyacrylate esters with quaternary ammonium groups.

Polyacrylate esters with ammonium salt groups obtained by the transesterification of alkyl polyacrylates produced by free radical polymerization are disclosed, wherein the alkyl groups of the acrylate esters have 1 to 8 carbon atoms, up to 50% of the acrylate esters can be replaced by the corresponding methacrylate esters and the transesterification is carried out witha) compounds of the formula ##STR1## b) saturated or unsaturated aliphatic alcohols having 8 to 22 carbon atoms or alkoxylated alkylphenols having 9 to 27 carbon atoms in the alkylphenol group,wherein the molar ratio of component a) to component b) is 1:9 to 9:1, in such amount that 5 to 70% of the ester groups are transesterified and subsequently, the transesterification product is transformed into a salt. The new polyacrylate esters with ammonium salt groups are distinguished by containing a lesser amount of low molecular weight compounds than products obtained through copolymerization and can be used as cationic surfactants and particularly, as active ingredients of metal adjuvants.
