摘要： Fluorine-containing, chiral and achiral liquid crystal compounds comprise (a) an aliphatic fluorocarbon terminal portion comprising a perfluorinated or partially-fluorinated alkylene group and a terminal hydrocarbon alkyl group, the groups optionally containing at least one catenary ether oxygen atom; (b) an aliphatic hydrocarbon terminal portion; and (c) a central core connecting the terminal portions. The compounds have smectic mesophases or latent smectic mesophases and are useful, for example, in liquid crystal display devices.

摘要： A process for preparing polar disulfone-functionalized molecules, which process comprises performing one or more of the following reactions:(i) reacting a vinyl ether disulfone molecule with an activated aromatic molecule, an activated heterocyclic molecule, a dye base, or a dye olefin;(ii) reacting an enamine disulfone molecule with a dye base or a dye olefin; and(iii) reacting an alkenyl disulfone molecule having a vinylogous methyl or methylene group conjugatively located relative to the disulfone group with an aldehyde or an acetal derived from an aldehyde.

摘要： Nonlinear optical (NLO) compositions are disclosed which contain polar disulfone-functionalized molecules (PDFMs) incorporated in a polymeric material. When aligned noncentrosymmetrically in the polymeric material, the PDFMs generate a second-order NLO response. There is also disclosed: a method of preparing a NLO composition; novel PDFMs and novel polymers; and a new process for preparing PDFMs.

摘要： Mono O-hydroxyalkylated derivatives of 1,1-dihydroperfluorinated or 1H,1-alkylperfluorinated alcohols are prepared by reacting the alcohols with alkylene carbonates at a temperature of at least 60.degree. C. in the presence of a one- or two-part catalyst. The catalyst is a nitrogenous base, optionally in combination with a tetraalkylammonium halide. The O-hydroxyalkylated derivatives are useful non-ionic surfactants and emulsifiable compounds for fire extinguishing systems.
