Abstract: 763,699. Filters. FRAM CORPORATION. Jan. 11, 1955 [Feb. 16. 1954]. No. 839/55. Class 46. A filter for petrol used in internal combustion engines, or for other volatile liquids, comprises a head 10, Fig. 2, having an inlet passage 12 and an outlet passage 13 and a central bore 14 extending up to the latter, a dirt-collecting bowl 11 and a filter unit, Fig. 3, removably secured in the bowl and including a bridge plate 21 clamped between the head and the bowl and having an inverted cup 27 supported thereby and a porous filter cup 30 permanently attached to the lower portion of the cup 27, the latter having one or more vapour vents 29 at its upper end. The plate 21 is part-circular, having two diametrically-opposite segments cut away to admit petrol from inlet 12 to bowl 11, but serves also to shield the (three) vents (see Fig. 3). The function of the vents is to permit vapour to pass from outside to inside the filter element and thus to prevent depression by accumulating vapour of the liquid level outside the element below the lower end of the filter cup 30 (which would cut off the flow). Furthermore the vents serve as by-passes for the liquid if the cup 30 becomes clogged. A gasket 26 on the filter element, Fig. 3, engages a shoulder 15, Fig. 2, on the outside of the bore 14 so that the cup 27 forms a liquid-tight partition between the inlet and outlet passages. Specification 711,131 is referred to.
