In a screw-on, throw-away filter, a cylindrical filter element 17, Fig. 1, is forced by a spring bridge-member 29 into engagement with a resilient annular gasket supported on a flange 28 of a ring 24, (see also Fig. 2), the latter in turn being supported (with intervening gasket) on a reinforcing plate 12. The annular gasket has an outer annulus 20 constituting, with plate 12, an anti-drain valve; unfiltered liquid (e.g. oil) entering at 16 with sufficient pressure raises the annulus 20 and fills the housing 10 to flow inwardly through the element 17. Filtered oil flows downward inside a perforate centre tube 19 and out at 15. The annular gasket also has an inner annulus 21 which forms, with holes in a horizontal portion 26 of ring 24, an excess-pressure by-pass-valve, the annulus 21 being raised by incoming oil, when the filter element is clogged, to permit unfiltered oil to pass out at 15. Filtering of compressed air to remove dirt and water or oil therefrom is also mentioned.
