Abstract: A modular material antenna assembly is provided that includes an antenna block having a portion with a shape that interlocks with a corresponding portion of an electrically non-conductive frame and secures the antenna block to the electrically non-conductive frame. The electrically non-conductive frame is attached to an interior of an electrically conductive housing so that the electrically non-conductive frame and the electrically conductive housing form an integrated structure. An antenna flex is then mechanically secured to the antenna block. The antenna flex may also be electrically connected to a circuit board. The frame is designed to support a cover glass for the portable electronic device and may be affixed to a housing. The dielectric constant of the antenna block is substantially less than the dielectric constant of the frame.

Abstract: Combined force and proximity sensing is disclosed. One or more sensors can concurrently sense a force applied by an object on a device surface and a proximity of the object to the surface. In an example, a single sensor can sense both force and proximity via a resistance change and a capacitance change, respectively, at the sensor. In another example, multiple sensors can be used, where one sensor can sense force via either a resistance change or a capacitance change and another sensor can sense proximity via a capacitance change.

Abstract: An assembly method suitable for assembling a portable electronic device having a housing with an undercut portion is disclosed. The method includes aligning a non-display portion of a display assembly with the undercut portion of the housing, the display assembly comprising a display, a protective top layer covering a top side of the display portion and the non-display portion and a battery module attached to an underside of the display assembly, electrically connecting the battery to a circuit previously installed in the housing, angling the display assembly in relation to a front opening of the housing in a tilted configuration such that the non-display portion is partially inserted into the undercut portion of the housing, and in the tilted configuration, performing a pre-install functional test on the display and fully inserting the display assembly into the housing only when the pre-install functional test is successfully completed.

Abstract: Thinned-portion substrates and processing of thinned-portion substrates is provided. A portion of a substrate, such as a mother glass used in touch screen manufacturing, can be thinned by forming a cavity in a surface of the substrate. Surface structures, such as touch sensing circuitry and/or display circuitry, can then be formed on the thinned portion of the substrate. For example, touch screen components can be formed as surface structures including touch sensing circuitry and display circuitry on one or more thinned substrate portions through processes including depositing, masking, etching, doping, etc. The thinned substrate portion, including the surface structures formed thereon, can then be detached from the surrounding thicker part of the substrate. In this way, for example, the surrounding thicker part of the substrate can provide structural integrity during various other manufacturing processes, while allowing surface structures to be formed directly on a thinner substrate.
