Abstract:
A tieback connection between an offshore production platform and a wellhead on the sea floor has a riser and a tubular expandable and contractable member within the riser. The expandable and contractable member compensates for axial movement within the riser while maintaining axial tension in the riser. The expandable and contractable member is of uni-body construction having a wall configured to correspondingly expand and contract to compensate for the riser movement. In cross section, the member wall comprises folds formable by alternating slots formed into the inner and outer wall surface or an undulating surface.
Abstract:
An adapter for connecting a casing annulus remediation system to a well having a wellhead with standard lateral ports. The adapter has a body with first and second ends. The first end of the adapter body has a substantially planar surface adapted to cover the lateral ports and be in abutting contact with the wellhead when the two are connected to one another. The second end of the adapter body has a planar surface positioned at an angle greater than 0 degrees and up to 90 degrees to the planar surface of the first end. The second end of the adapter is adapted to be connected to a casing annulus remediation system.
Abstract:
An adjustable casing sub having an outer housing, an inner housing insertable into the outer housing, and a ratcheting system for coupling the inner housing within the outer housing. An annulus is between a portion of the inner and outer housing, the annulus including an inwardly tapered section. A metal faced seal is disposed in the annulus, wherein the metal faced seal includes a sliding surface and a compressive sealing surface. The sliding surface may include a malleable inlay and the compressive sealing surface may include a spring like element. Moreover, the metal faced seal radial thickness is greater than the inwardly tapered section radial thickness.
Abstract:
A system for monitoring strain in a wellbore casing includes one or more gages that are affixed to an outer surface of the wellbore casing. Each gage includes one or more apertures. During operation, variations in the shape and spacing of the apertures are monitored and used to determine a level of strain in the wellbore casing.
Abstract:
A flowline connector will remotely connect subsea flowlines without the assistance of a diver. The flowline connector has a frame which supports a seal carrier plate assembly. Springs allow axial movement of the carrier plate assembly during engagement of mating hubs of flowlines. A metal seal carried by the carrier plate assembly engages conical seats in the hubs of the two flowlines. An elastomeric test seal located radially outward of the metal seal seals between flat faces of the hubs of the flowlines. The test seals elongate radially to wipe the sealing surfaces clean during the makeup.
Abstract:
A hub clamp will be used to connect two conduits together in end-to-end relationship. Each conduit has a pair of generally parallel load shoulders that extend around the conduit and are axially spaced from each other. The clamp has two sets of load shoulders, one for engaging each set of load shoulders on each end of the conduit. The clamp is in two halves, and when bolted together, draws the ends of the conduits toward each other. Each load shoulder is separated by a flank. The two flanks of the mating load shoulders are separated by a gap when fully made up. The first load shoulder of each conduit has multiple angled sections. The lead section is at a greater angle than the load section relative to a plane perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the conduit. The clamp will be mounted releasably to an upper conduit so that it can slide inward and outward, for vertical conduit applications.
Abstract:
A multiple tubing hanger tie back arrangement is disclosed in a preferred embodiment associated with a shear ram tubing head system (10). The arrangement includes a lower tubing hanger (44) sealingly secured within a lower tubing head (28) for supporting a tubing string (22). The lower hanger includes a control shoulder (60) at its upper end and a tapered interior surface (62). An upper tubing hanger (70) spaced above the lower hanger is also sealingly secured within an upper tubing head (24). A tie back subassembly (90) connects the upper and lower hangers, and preferably includes a tubing member (94) and a spacer member (92). The spacer member includes a stab nipple (96) in interference engagement with the lower hanger interior surface (62), and a load transfer surface (98) abuting the control shoulder (60). The tubing member (94) is located in the bore of the shear ram (26) so that severance of the tubing member (94) does not disturb the production tubing string (22) supported by the lower hanger (44). After severance, the tie back stub can be readily removed. A method of installation is also disclosed, including the steps of adjusting the distance between the upper hanger (70) and load transfer surface (98) to match the critical distance between the upper hanger bowl (38) and lower hanger control shoulder (60), so that the installed tie back assembly maintains pressure and mechanical continuity through the stack (30).
Abstract:
A tubular member (42, 62) of the type commonly utilized in wellhead equipment (10) having embodied therein sealing means (72, 64) operative when cooperatively associated with a mating member (16, 14) to effectuate the establishment of a fire resistant seal between the tubular member (42, 62) and the mating member (16, 14). The subject tubular member (42, 62) preferably terminates at one end thereof in an extended neck portion (82, 80) with the sealing means (72, 64) being provided on the outside circumferential surface of the extended neck portion (82, 80) adjacent the free end of the latter. The mating member (16, 14) includes an inside circumferential surface suitably dimensioned such that the tubular member (42, 62), when inserted therewithin, can be made to occupy a fixed longitudinal position relative thereto. The sealing means (72, 64) includes an annular band (74, 66) embodying preselected height and width dimensions, the ratio of which falls within a predetermined range such that when the tubular member (42, 62) and the mating member (16, 14) occupy the aforesaid fixed longitudinal position thereof the engagement of the annular band (74, 66) of the tubular member (42, 62) with the inner circumferential surface of the mating member (16, 14) establishes an elastic but fire resistant seal therebetween characterized by the fact that plastic deformation is avoided yet the required unit loading is furnished thereby.
Abstract:
An offshore composite enhanced metallic drilling riser is equipped to enable preloading of the composite shell and the metallic riser. A riser has steel end connectors and a continuous metallic inner liner, encased in a composite shell. A segmented hyperboloid shaped profile is located near each of the end fittings for preloading of the composite and the metallic riser. In one version, both halves of the hyperboloid shape are capable of axial movement by adjusting jack bolts connected to one of the hyperboloid halves. One of the halves is limited in axial movement while the other half moves axially away from the restricted half, the movement simultaneously generates the composite pre-load and the metallic riser pre-load. The other version uses fluid pressure between mating faces of the segments to push them apart.
