摘要: An ink jet print head has first nozzles of a first diameter for ejecting droplets of ink having a first mass, and second nozzles of a second diameter for ejecting droplets of ink having a second mass. The first diameter is larger than the second diameter, and the first mass is larger than the second mass. First and second heater-switch pairs are connected in parallel on a substrate of the print head. The first heater-switch pairs include first heaters adjacent corresponding first nozzles, and the second heater-switch pairs include second heaters adjacent corresponding second nozzles. The first and second heaters are composed of electrically resistive material occupying first and second heater areas on the substrate. The first heater-switch pairs also include first switching devices connected in series with the first heaters, with each first switching device developing a first switching device voltage drop as a first electrical current flows through. The second heater-switch pairs include second switching devices connected in series with the second heaters, with each second switching device developing a second switching device voltage drop as a second electrical current flows through. The first heater area is larger than the second heater area, thus matching heater area to nozzle diameter to provide for more efficient transfer of thermal energy to the ink. The voltage drop across each first switching device is substantially equivalent to the voltage drop across each second switching device, thus reducing undesirable nozzle-to-nozzle variations in the amount of energy delivered to the ink.

摘要: An ink jet printing apparatus forms a printed image on a print medium based on image data. The apparatus includes an ink jet print head having ink ejection nozzles in a nozzle array. Ink is ejected from the nozzles and onto the print medium as the print head scans across the print medium in a scan direction, thereby forming the image on the print medium. The nozzle array on the print head includes a first substantially columnar array of nozzles aligned with a print medium advance direction which is perpendicular to the scan direction. The first array has a first upper subarray pair that includes a first upper left and a first upper right subarray of nozzles. The first upper left and a first upper right subarrays each include a substantially linear arrangement of n number of nozzles having equal nozzle-to-nozzle spacings. The nozzle-to-nozzle spacing in the first upper right subarray is equivalent to the nozzle-to-nozzle spacing in the first upper left subarray. The first upper right subarray is offset from the first upper left subarray in the scan direction by a first horizontal spacing, and is offset in the print medium advance direction by one-half of the nozzle-to-nozzle spacing. The nozzle array also includes a second substantially columnar array of nozzles aligned with the print medium advance direction. The second array is offset from the first array in the scan direction by a second horizontal spacing, and is offset in the print medium advance direction by one-fourth of the nozzle-to-nozzle spacing. The second columnar array has a second upper subarray pair that includes a second upper left and a second upper right subarray. The second upper left and second upper right subarrays each include a substantially linear arrangement of n number of nozzles having equal nozzle-to-nozzle spacings. The second upper right subarray is offset from the second upper left subarray in the scan direction by the first horizontal spacing and in the print medium advance direction by one-half of the nozzle-to-nozzle spacing.

摘要: The invention relates to an apparatus for providing information to a printer controller in order to identify the type of printer cartridge installed in a thermal ink jet printer. The apparatus includes a printer cable containing a set of electrically-conductive wires connected to contacts in a printer cable connector. The contacts of the printer cable connector make physical connection to an identification circuit on the printer cartridge. The identification circuit includes an electrical conductor which is at an electrical reference potential. When none, or one or more contacts on the cable connector are in electrical contact with the electrical conductor of the identification circuit, a signal corresponding to the identification of the printer cartridge is produced which is used by the printer controller to determine the type of printer cartridge installed in the printer. Selective contact between the connector contacts and the identification circuit, so as to produce an electrical code, may be obtained using a label having apertures, contact pads, electrical traces, or a combination thereof. Accordingly, various cartridge identification codes can be produced using various methods which allow encoding of the information on a cartridge during or after the manufacture of the cartridge body is substantially complete.

摘要: The present invention is directed toward an improved heater chip for an ink jet printer. The heater chip has a diamond-like-carbon coating that functions as the cavitation and passivation layers of the heating elements on the heater chip. To improve the efficiency of the heater chip, the diamond-like-carbon coating is surrounded by a material that has a lower thermal conductivity than diamond. This surrounding layer limits thermal diffusion from the heating elements into the heater chip. A smoothing layer of tantalum is deposited over the diamond-like-carbon layer to insure that vaporization of the ink occurs at the ink's superheat limit. The diamond-like-carbon layer is preferably less than 8700 Angstroms in thickness such that less than 1 microjoule of energy is required to expel of ink droplet having a mass between 2-4 nanograms.

摘要: A method informs a user of an ink jet printer of the end of life of a consumable. The consumable supplies ink to a printhead having a plurality of ink ejection nozzles and an associated plurality of ink jetting actuators, each of the plurality of ink jetting actuators being addressable. The printhead includes a plurality of address lines for facilitating selection of one or more of the plurality of ink jetting actuators. The method includes the steps of defining a notice threshold that is associated with a corresponding amount of ink remaining in the consumable; providing control logic for selectively controlling the plurality of address lines; determining whether the amount of ink remaining in the consumable has reached the notice threshold; and upon reaching the notice threshold, reducing an image density of images formed by the printhead by selectively disabling at least one of the plurality of address lines.

摘要: A system is described for compensating for misalignments in an ink jet printer having an ink jet print head cartridge that includes a heater chip. The system includes determining alignment adjustment information related to the misalignments in the ink jet printer, loading the alignment adjustment information into a volatile memory device on the heater chip, and accessing the alignment adjustment information from the volatile memory device. The system also includes generating nozzle control signals based at least in part on the alignment adjustment information. The nozzle control signals are selectively provided to resistive heating elements in the heater chip, thereby heating ink in ink chambers adjacent the heating elements and ejecting ink droplets toward a print medium. The timing of the nozzle control signals is adjusted based upon the amount of misalignment in the various components of the printer and print head. The timing adjustments are applied to groups of nozzles so that dots printed by one group are substantially vertically aligned with dots printed by another group, thereby reducing the amount of perceptible skew in the printed output.

摘要: A thermal ink jet printing apparatus maintains stable printing output as certain characteristics of the apparatus change over its operational lifetime. The apparatus includes an ink jet print head with resistive heating elements for receiving electrical energy pulses having a voltage level and for transferring heat energy pulses having a desired energy level into adjacent ink based on the electrical energy pulses. The print head includes nozzles associated with the resistive heating elements through which droplets of the ink are ejected when the heat energy pulses are transferred into the ink. The apparatus further includes a printer controller in electrical communication with the print head. The printer controller determines a pulse count indicative of a number of electrical energy pulses, applies the electrical energy pulses having a first pulse width to the resistive heating elements when the pulse count is less than a threshold value, and applies the electrical energy pulses having an adjusted pulse width to the resistive heating elements when the pulse count exceeds the threshold value. The difference in the first and the adjusted pulse widths compensates for changes in the electrical resistance of the resistive heating elements over time.
