Method and apparatus wherein continuous indexed lengths of optical fiber are automatically measured for load at failure for each failure below a predetermined maximum stress. A predetermined length of optical fiber is indexed. The optical fiber is clamped at one or more clamp points along its length. Increasing tension is applied to a first indexed length of optical fiber between at least one clamp point and a tension application means. Increasing tension is applied between an initial value and the predetermined maximum load. The increasing tension is measured during its application. If failure occurs, the actual load at failure is detected while the increasing tension is being applied. When failure does not occur, the first length of optical fiber is released and a second length of optical fiber is indexed to the position where increasing tension is applied to the second length between at least one clamp point and the tension application means.

A method of protecting a silica-containing article used in the manufacture of an optical fiber includes the step of applying to the silica-containing article a protective layer that facilitates removal of particulates that deposit on the protective layer and that ablates during or can be removed before subsequent processing of the silica-containing article. An intermediate product used in the manufacture of an optical fiber and protected against break-inducing particulates includes a silica-containing article, and a protective layer that facilitates removal of particulates that have deposited on the protective layer and that can be ablated during or removed before subsequent processing of the intermediate product.

The present invention provides lensed fibers and methods of making lensed fibers. According to one embodiment of the invention, a method of making a functional-coated lensed fiber includes the steps of providing a lensed fiber, the lensed fiber having a terminal section including a terminal fiber segment and a lensed segment, the lensed segment having an optically operative area; covering at least part of the terminal section of the lensed fiber with a protective element, thereby forming a protected lensed fiber having an optically operative area that is not covered by the protective element; and forming a functional coating on the optically operative area of the lensed segment of the protected lensed fiber to form the functional-coated lensed fiber. The method can be used to provide antireflection coated lensed fibers that are resistant to breakage.

In connection with drawing a fiber in a drawing portion of a drawing device having a refractory, oxide component, a method and apparatus provide an environment in the drawing portion that causes active oxidation of a refractory contaminant on a blank. The active oxidation of the refractory contaminant causes it to corrode away during drawing.
