    摘要: An induction furnace capable of drawing large diameter preforms of up to 130 mm is described. The induction furnace has top and bottom chimneys surrounding the entire preform during operation of the furnace with an inert conditioning gas which is introduced into the top chimney and flows downward through the furnace body and bottom chimney without significant turbulence. A distributor ring inside the top chimney redirects flow from a circumferential direction to a downward direction. The top chimney also includes a resilient seal to releasably hold the top of the preform. The bottom chimney has a smoothly decreasing cross-sectional area preventing turbulence at the furnace exit. The furnace insulation is preferably a rigid self-supporting graphite cylinder. A method of drawing large diameter preforms either to an optical fiber or to a preform of smaller diameter using such a furnace is also described.

    摘要: Apparatus for heating a vertically suspended preform from which lightguide fiber is drawn includes a torch having a plurality of ducts that open to a surface adjacent to a lower end of the preform. Fuel and oxidizing gases flow from the ducts, mix at the surface and flame about a necked-down, lower portion of the preform to form a melt cone from which the fiber is drawn. The ducts and the preform are positioned to cause a combustion zone of each flame to impinge upon the preform. In a preferred embodiment, the openings of the ducts are arrayed in a circle which is referred to as a pitch circle and which has a diameter that is less than that of the preform. Also, the ducts are arranged so that the gases are directed at a predetermined angle to the axis of the preform.

The muffle is heated to a temperature sufficient to cause a first end of the blank to reach the drawing temperature of the material thereof.     摘要: In a furnace for heating an optical fiber preform to be inserted from an insertion opening, the furnace includes an annular sealing body for sealing a clearance gap between the optical fiber preform and the insertion opening. The annular sealing body is formed from stacked annular disks respectively having an insertion hole in its center area. The annular disk has slits formed from a inner edge of the annular disk toward its periphery side and flexible portions that are defined by the slits and bend by an interference with the optical fiber preform to be inserted into the insertion hole. When the optical fiber preform is inserted into the insertion hole of the annular sealing body, the flexible portions bend.
