摘要:
A pressure vessel for an inflatable restraint cushion contains superatmospheric fluid. The vessel opens to an annular passageway which in turn opens radially for communication with the cushion adjacent a closed end thereof. The passageway is sealed intermediate its ends by a rupturable main diaphragm. A slidable piston is located within the passageway adjacent the pressure vessel and is normally held against movement by a shearable pin carried by the piston and fitting within openings in the wall of the passageway. The piston is not sealed to the passageway so that both faces of the piston are thus subjected to the pressure of the fluid. A rupturable auxiliary diaphragm closes an opening which communicates the one portion of the passageway between the piston and main diaphragm with the atmosphere. An acceleration responsive sensor is mounted on the passageway and, upon receiving an acceleration pulse of predetermined amplitude and time, releases an operator to rupture the auxiliary diaphragm and vent the one portion of the passageway to atmosphere. The differential pressure drives the piston along the passageway and through the main diaphragm to rupture this diaphragm and communicate the cushion with the pressure fluid for inflation thereof. A metal plug at the closed end of the passageway is engaged by the piston to arrest its movement.

An extractor for removing a round of caseless ammunition from the chamber of a firearm capable of firing caseless ammunition. The extractor comprises an elongated spring steel member having a forked end providing a pair of spaced spring fingers which are adapted to embrace the molded propellant of a round of caseless ammunition. The elongated spring steel member is slidably supported by a guide block mounted on the exterior of the firearm and the spring steel member can be axially projected into a position where it grips the round of caseless ammunition and then moved back to withdraw the round from the chamber of the firearm. The spaced fingers of the extractor are formed with beveled edges which permit the extractor to slidably engage the molded propellant of the caseless round when the extractor is being moved forward but include a sharp edge which bites into the caseless round to form a means for withdrawing the round from the chamber when the extractor is pulled back. The firearm has an opening which is closed by a pivotally mounted door and the extractor is arranged to move the door to an open position and grip the caseless round of ammunition, when the extractor is projected into the chamber to grip the round of ammunition. The door is spring biased toward a closed position, and when the extractor is moved back to the position outside of the chamber, the door is returned to the closed position.

A firearm capable of firing ammunition of the caseless-type The firearm has a bolt carrying a firing pin and an obturator which is slidably supported by the barrel of the firearm. The obturator is provided with a radial extending wall and the pressure of the gas within the chamber, when a round of caseless ammunition is fired, forces the obturator into tight engagement with the bolt to prevent gas leakage. The obturator also has a circumferentially extending wall of relatively thin radial dimension which is forced against the barrel when the round of caseless ammunition is fired. A ratchet-and-pawl arrangement is provided connected with the obturator and as the bolt is opened and closed and rotated during these operations the obturator is rotated in one direction. The bolt has a bore containing a firing pin seal disposed about the firing pin. This seal has an end portion formed with an axially extending groove to provide inner and outer circumferentially extending lips. These lips are expanded respectively against the bore wall of the bolt and a portion of the firing pin when a cartridge is fired to prevent gas leakage. The firing pin includes a shaft of steel material having a firing tip formed of a refractory material such as a tantalum alloy.

A FIRE CONTROL SYSTEM FOR AN AUTOMTIC FIREARM CAPABLE OF BEING MANUALLY SET TO SELECTIVELY PROVIDE AUTOMATIC CLOSED-BOLT OPERTION, AUTOMATIC OPEN-BOLT OPERATION AND SEMIAUTOMATIC CLOSED-BOLT OPERTION. THE FIREARM CAN BE SET TO THESE MODES OF OPERATION BY MOVING A MODE-SELECTOR KNOB LOCATED ON THE EXTERIOR OF THE FIREARM. THE KNOB MOVES A CAM WHICH COOPERATES WITH SEARS PARTS TO SET THE MODE OF OPERATION. A HEAT SENSING DEVICE IS POSITIONED IN THE BARREL OF THE FIREARM NEAR THE FIRING CHAMBER TO SENSE THE TEMPERTURE OF THE BARREL AND WHEN THIS TEMPERATURE REACHES A POINT AT WHICH COOK-OFF OF A CARTRIDGE IS INCIPIENT A MECHANISM IS ACTUATED TO AUTOMATICALLY SWITCH THE FIREARM TO ITS AUTOMATIC OPEN-BOLT MODE OF OPERATION. THE FIREARM IS CAPABLE OF FIRING CASELESS AMMUNITION.
