Abstract: A system and method for uptower machining of a wind turbine to accommodate a load control system, such as an Advanced Load Controls (ALC) system is disclosed. The load control system includes a plurality of load control components, such as one or more proximity sensors. The method includes designating a first machining location on a rotor lock plate of the wind turbine; mounting a machining device within the wind turbine proximate to the first machining location; machining the first machining location on the rotor lock plate via the machining device; and, installing the load control system within the wind turbine such that at least one of the load control components is installed proximate to the first machining location.

Abstract: A method for preventing catastrophic damage in a drivetrain of a wind turbine includes receiving, via a controller, a speed measurement of the generator of the drivetrain. The method also includes determining an electrical torque of a generator of the drivetrain of the wind turbine. The method further includes estimating, via the controller, a mechanical torque of the rotor as a function of at least one of the electrical torque and the speed measurement of the generator. Further, the method includes comparing, via the controller, the estimated mechanical torque to an implausible torque threshold, wherein torque values above the implausible torque threshold speed values greater that the implausible speed threshold. Moreover, the method includes implementing, via the controller, a control action for the wind turbine when the estimated mechanical torque exceeds the implausible torque threshold.

The method includes the step of designating a first machining location on a rotor lock plate of the wind turbine. The first machining location is at or near an insert in the rotor lock plate. A mounting step mounts a machining device within the wind turbine proximate to the first machining location. A machining step machines the first machining location and the insert via the machining device. The machining step creates a non-flat surface at the first machining location. The non-flat surface is a substantially inductively flat surface configured for use with one or more proximity sensors in the load control system.
