    Abstract: Coating methods and a coated substrate are provided. The coating method includes providing a component having an aperture formed in a surface thereof, arranging and disposing a hollow member on a portion of the surface to define a hollow space above the aperture corresponding to a shape of the aperture at the surface, applying at least one coating over the surface of the component and the hollow member to form an applied coating having an applied coating thickness, and removing at least a portion of the hollow member to expose the hollow space through the applied coating. The coated substrate includes a component having an aperture formed in a surface thereof, a hollow member arranged and disposed on the surface to define a hollow space above the aperture, and an applied coating over the surface of the component, the hollow space being exposed through the applied coating.

The coating process includes positioning a component within an enclosed coating system, the enclosed coating system including a coating apparatus, applying a first coating over at least a portion of the component, then robotically applying a mask to the component, then applying a second coating over at least the portion of the component. The component remains within the enclosed coating system throughout the process. Another process also includes removing a first coating head portion of the coating apparatus after applying the first coating and replacing the first coating head portion with a masking head portion, then removing the masking head portion after robotically applying the mask to the component and replacing the masking head portion with a second coating head portion.

    Abstract: A method for modifying an aperture in a component, a system for modifying flow through a component, and a turbine component are disclosed. The method includes providing a substrate having at least one aperture having an electrically-conductive surface, providing a deposition device including an ESD torch, the ESD torch including an aperture penetrating electrode including a conductive material, inserting the aperture penetrating electrode at least partially into the aperture, and generating an arc between the aperture penetrating electrode and the electrically-conductive surface to deposit electrode material within the aperture.
