Derivatives of 2-pyrrolidone-5-carboxylic acid having excellent moisturizing properties are provided which have the structure ##STR1## wherein R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 are the same or different and are lower alkyl and aralkyl and n is 1 to 8 and including cationic salts thereof such as the pyrrolidone carboxylic acid salt thereof. These compounds are useful as moisturizing agents.Cosmetics, shampoos, hair conditioners and skin toners containing such compounds are also provided.

The instant invention relates to novel surfactant-free, multiphase sunscreen compositions that provide protection from the sun, have a unique visual appeal, and provide skin conditioning and moisturization. In a two-phase embodiment of the instant invention, the compositions are comprised of (1) a first layer comprising a high-density ester and sunscreen, and (2) a second aqueous layer, which is usually the top layer. In a three-phase embodiment of the instant invention, the compositions are comprised of (1) a first layer comprising a high-density ester and and sunscreen, (2) a second aqueous layer, and (3) a third oily layer. The high-density ester layer usually has a specific gravity that is greater than that of the aqueous layer and the aqueous layer usually has a specific gravity that is greater than the oily layer. In preferred embodiments, each phase is substantially clear and has a volume approximately equal to that of the other phase(s). The phases disperse upon mixing and separate over time after mixing. The phases may be colored differently to enhance visual appeal. In some embodiments, emulsified boundary layer(s) form between the phases and constitute third or fourth phases.

In compositions and methods of the invention, ethoxylated nonionic, urethane dimers increase the viscosity of water based surfactant systems and serve as thickeners. These thickeners produce clear solutions in combination with surfactants and can be made sufficiently water soluble to produce clear solutions in water. The thickeners are compatible with anionic, cationic, amphoteric and nonionic surfactants and are functional and stable over a wide pH range.

The invention provides polymeric emulsifiers that: are useful in the manufacture of personal care products such as skin creams, sunscreens, hair conditioners and shampoos; have similar aesthetic properties as conventional surfactants when used in personal care product applications; and that are relatively free of the drawbacks associated with known anionic or nonionic polymeric emulsifiers. In certain embodiments, the invention provides o/w or w/o emulsions comprising cationic polyurethane emulsifiers (surfactants) or combinations of cationic polyurethane emulsifiers and conventional low HLB emulsifiers. Emulsions of the invention are useful as components of personal care products such as hair and skin care products and are functional and stable over a wide pH range.
