New medical self-polymerizable sealing cement with an acrylic polymer and/or copolymer base, applicable for prosthetic implants, which is obtained by mixing a liquid phase and a solid phase. The liquid phase, being viscous, forms a collodion of an acrylic polymer and/or copolymer in at least one monomer, while the solid phase is composed of an acrylic polymer and/or copolymer possibly containing a mineral load. The new cement is not dangerous for the patient, due to an absence of monomer exudation and due to a polymerization temperature which is always lower than the mobilization temperature of human fat.

A total knee prosthesis comprises an upper and a lower support member provided with externally threaded, tapered shanks to which they are detachably secured, these shanks being respectively screwable into the medullary canals of a femur and a tibia of a patient to be fitted with the prosthesis. The upper support member has spherically convex rear condylar extensions coming to rest on respective pads of the lower support member which are of different height determining the physiological valgus of the patient's leg. The condylar extensions are interconnected by an axle pin received in a bifurcate projection of the lower support member; a forward extension of the upper support member forms a concave shield engageble with the natural kneecap or with a prosthetic patellar disk of the patient.

The male and female parts of a hip prosthesis each comprise two parts, a base fixed to the bone, and an active organ attached removably to the base. The upper face of the base has a truncated conical bore with a threaded bore at the bottom. The active member has a conically shaped projection with a threaded end which matches the bore in the base and which is screwed in the base to effectively lock the active member to the base. Diametrically opposite flat parts on the base and active member are provided to allow the active member to rotate while preventing the base from rotating.

An articulated splint for knee joint, of the type having two symmetrical portions each of which is made up of two uprights, an upper femoral one and a lower tibial one, are connected to one another by a rod. These uprights are to be fastened with their opposite number of the other portion, against one of the side faces of the corresponding part of a leg of a patient by a single cast covering the two portions of the splint and whose central part covering the knee is then cut out or eliminated. A first pin connects one of the uprights to the rod, this pin extending through the rod via an aperture whose longitudinal axis is oriented in the direction of a second connecting pin of the other upright on the rod. Pin-like members may be provided on the rod to limit the angular extent of possible movement of one or both of the uprights in one or both directions. The pin like members are threaded into respective threaded bores in the rod. Additional threaded bores may be provided to allow adjustment of the maximum angle of movement. A wing may be provided on the rod for assuring relative closing angular movement of one upright with respect to the other in a given direction.

A partial prosthesis for a joint designed to replace the head of a femur. A spherical head integral with a pin, which is designed to engage the femur, when in its utilization position engages a spherical cap which is to be accommodated and supported in the acetabulum of a hip. The cap has an inside spherical bearing surface of given diameter to assure that the spherical head has great freedom of movement therein and, at its base, an internal cylindrical shoulder small in width and of a diameter slightly smaller than the spherical bearing surface.

A process for reducing the coefficient of friction and the wear between a metal part and an organic polymer- or copolymer-based part, in an aqueous medium containing chlorides, characterized in that the organic polymer- or copolymer-based part is submitted to a surface treatment by ionic implantation of elements selected from nitrogen, argon, oxygen and carbon.
