A conveyor belt assembly is presented for use in conjunction with a rotary drum filtration apparatus, the conveyor belt passing longitudinally through the drum. The conveyor belt assembly comprises two movable frame sections and an associated conveyor belt. A first movable frame section is slidably mounted, preferably by rollers on rails, on the supporting framework whereby the conveyor belt may be moved between an operative position inside the drum and a retracted position outside the drum. The second movable frame section is pivotably mounted and is capable of pivoting upwardly into a raised position thereby providing a space for the first frame section to be slidably positioned thereunder. Preferably, a ramp means attached to the slidable frame section urges the second pivotable frame section upwardly to the raised position.

A method for the reduction of metallic oxides and a rotating-hearth furnace. The method is for the reduction of metallic oxides in a furnace with a ring-shaped rotating hearth in which a carbonaceous reducing agent and metallic oxides are deposited in a strip on a part of the rotating hearth and are then transported in a roughly helical movement to a discharge device. The reducing agent is preheated and mixed with the preheated metallic oxides before and/or during their deposition on the rotating hearth. In a first reducing stage, the volatile components of the carbonaceous reducing agent (mainly methane and hydrogen) are used to initiate the reduction of the metallic oxides and, in a second reducing stage, carbon monoxide is used. The rotating-hearth furnace is subdivided into a charging zone, at least one intermediate zone adjacent to the charging zone, and a discharge zone adjacent to the intermediate zone.

A filtration apparatus comprised of a rotary drum having a plurality of internal vanes for conveying slag material therein therein is presented. The slag is conveyed upwardly by the vanes, after which it falls freely onto a conveyer belt passing longitudinally through the drum. Each vane consists of a retaining blade and a liquid permeable filtering blade spaced from the retaining blade. A deflecting means is positioned beneath the filtering blade. The deflecting means includes a deflecting plate associated with a support member. The support member and the retaining blade provide a supporting frame work for the rotary drum.

Molten slag is granulated with water to produce a granulated-slag/water sry that is fed into the bottom of a horizontally extending foraminous drum. This drum has radially inwardly extending vanes and is rotated to lift up the granulated slag and separate it from the water, discharging the slag onto a conveyor belt for storage or further use. The water running out of the slag slurry is recirculated for use in the initial granulation step for the molten slag stream.

The method deposits two or several layers with increasing metal oxide contents in each layer towards a top loading surface and decreases carbon contents towards the top loading surface, which carbon will be preheated to a temperature of the order of 200° C. while the metal oxides will be preheated to a temperature of 800° C. The furnace is provided with equipment producing at the loading surface triangular grooves and in first and second zones of the furnace matching equipment with double action.

The granulation of molten material, blast furnace slag for example, is accomplished by wetting the slag with a stream of water and thereafter transporting the thus formed granules away from the point of granulation with the water stream. Water consumption is minimized and average grain size increased by employing a multi-layer water stream defined by currents having different temperatures and pressures.
