COMPOUNDS ARE DESCRIBED OF THE STRUCTURE
1,2-(-O-P(-X)-S-),(R'')N''-BENZENE
WHEREIN R'' IS SELECTED FROM THE GROUP CONSISTING OF ALKYL OF 1 TO 18 CARBON ATOMS, ARYL OF 6 TO 12 CARBON ATOMS AND CYCLOHEXYL; X IS A HALOGEN SELECTED FROM THE GROUP CONSISTING OF CHLORINE, BROMINE AND IODINE; AND N'' RANGES FROM 0 TO 4. THE COMPOUNDS ARE PREPARED BY REACTING AN ORTHOMERCAPTOPHENOL COMPOUND WITH PHOSPHORUS TRIHALIDE. THE RESULTING COMPOUNDS CAN BE USED TO IMPART FIRE RETARDANCY TO PLASTIC COMPOSITIONS, IN PARTICULAR POLYSTYRENE.

IN WHICH R2 IS SELECTED FROM THE GROUP CONSISTING OF ARYL AND SUBSTITUTED ARYL, IN WHICH R1 IS SELECTED FROM THE GROUP CONSISTING OF ALKYL, SUBSTITUTED ALKYL, ARYL, AND SUBSTITUTED ARYL FOR EXAMPLE, AND IN WHICH N1 IS FROM 0 TO 4. WHERE N1 IS MORE THAN 1, THE MULTIPLE SUBSTITUENTS MAY BE EITHER THE SAME OF DIFFERENT. A COMPOUND OF THIS TYPE IS USEFUL AS A BACTERICIDE. ADDITIONALLY, A COMPOUND OF THIS TYPE IS SUITABLE FOR USE AS AN INTERMEDIATE IN THE SYNTHESIS OF MORE COMPLICATED COMPOUNDS, AND AS A POLYMER STABILIZER.

THIS INVENTION IS DIRECTED TO A NOVEL PHOSPHITE ESTER COMPOSITION CONTAINING PARTICULAR NITROGEN-CONTAINING COMPOUNDS WHICH STABILIZES THE PHOSPHITE ESTER AGAINST HYDROLYSIS AND REMAINS IN SOLUTION, RELATES TO NOVEL EPOXY RESIN COMPOSITIONS CONTAINING THE STABILIZED PHOSPHITE ESTER COMPOSITION, AND RELATES TO THE STABILIZING USE.
IN WHICH R2 IS SELECTED FROM THE GROUP CONSISTING OF ARYL AND SUBSTITUTED ARYL, IN WHICH R1 IS SELECTED FROM THE GROUP CONSISTING OF ALKYL, SUBSTITUTED ALKYL, ARYL, AND SUBSTITUTED ARYL, FOR EXAMPLE, AND IN WHICH N1 IS FROM 0 TO 4. WHERE N1 IS MORE THAN 1, THE MULTIPLE SUBSTITUENTS MAY BE EITHER THE SAME OR DIFFERENT. COMPOUNDS OF THIS INVENTION ARE USEFUL AS STABILIZERS AGAINST DEGRADATION OF POLYMERS SUCH AS POLYPROPYLENE, POLYETHYLENE, VARIOUS COPOLYMERS THEREOF, AND THE LIKE. ADDITIONALLY, A COMPOUND OF THIS TYPE IS SUITABLE FOR USE AS AN INTERMEDIATE IN THE SYNTHESIS OF MORE COMPLICATED COMPOUNDS.
