摘要: A downhole tool can include a photon beam source configured to transmit a photon beam into materials lining a wellbore. The materials may comprise fluid, casing, and cement. A photon detector in the tool is configured to count detected photons received at a predetermined angle from the materials. The density of the borehole material may be determined in response to the number of detected photons. Changes in a distribution of a plurality of photon count ratio values may indicate the standoff distance. Additional apparatus, systems, and methods are disclosed.

摘要: In some embodiments, an apparatus and a system, as well as a method and an article, may operate to receive photons at inner surfaces of an array of tubes forming a columnar structure, the tubes including a material with substantially high density, wherein longitudinal axes of the tubes are substantially parallel. Further activities include directing the photons within the columnar structure to a position-sensitive detector to measure the photons, wherein the position-sensitive detector is divided into an array of pixels, and wherein individual ones of the tubes in the array of tubes maintain a fixed mechanical arrangement with individual ones of the array of pixels, to provide collimation of the photons from a first end of the tubes to a second end of the tubes coupled to the position-sensitive detector. Additional apparatus, systems, and methods are described.

摘要: A tomographic imaging apparatus utilizes Compton backscattering to evaluate cement behind the casing. The imaging apparatus includes a slant-hole or pin-hole collimator coupled to a series of detectors in order to count the number of photons that backscatter off from the cement. The number of backscattered photons is proportional to the density of the cement behind the casing. Using the photon count, an image processing unit of the imaging apparatus generates a 2D or 3D tomographic image of the borehole.

摘要: A method for monitoring tubing wall thickness includes conveying a tool through a tubular string in a borehole, the tool including a photon source that directs a photon beam along a radial path toward a wall of the borehole, the tool further including an array of collimated detectors that measure Compton backscattering rates at respective distance bins along the radial path. The method further includes calculating a sequence of ratios between measurements from neighboring detectors. The method further includes identifying one or more local extrema in the sequence, each extremum representing a boundary between different materials. The method further includes determining a wall thickness of the tubular string from absolute or relative positions of the one or more extrema. The method further includes displaying a representation of the wall thickness.

Deviation of energy spectra of detected gamma rays in each selected energy window of a set of selected energy windows with respect to reference energy spectra of the respective selected energy window can be detected. One or more properties of one or more regions around the tool can be determined from the deviations, the regions being between the tool and a source of the detected gamma rays in a formation around the well. Additional apparatus, systems, and methods having a gamma ray detection package can operate in a variety of applications.
