Systems and methods process a measured ultrasonic response waveform to determine a well casing thickness and an acoustic impedance of a sealing medium surrounding the well casing. An array of simulated response waveforms corresponding to a set of candidate acoustic impedances for the sealing medium surrounding the well casing and a set of candidate well casing thicknesses is generated. A simulated response waveform from the array of simulated response waveforms is identified that best matches the measured response waveform so as to determine the sealing medium acoustic impedance.

A method for monitoring tubing wall thickness includes conveying a tool through a tubular string in a borehole, the tool including a photon source that directs a photon beam along a radial path toward a wall of the borehole, the tool further including an array of collimated detectors that measure Compton backscattering rates at respective distance bins along the radial path. The method further includes calculating a sequence of ratios between measurements from neighboring detectors. The method further includes identifying one or more local extrema in the sequence, each extremum representing a boundary between different materials. The method further includes determining a wall thickness of the tubular string from absolute or relative positions of the one or more extrema. The method further includes displaying a representation of the wall thickness.

Photons reflected from the geological formation and the cement are detected on a gamma detector having a collimator. A detector-to-source distance, a collimator angle, and/or a collimator diameter are set to provide an energy spectra independent of the geological formation. The quality of the cement may be determined based on the energy spectra of the detected photons.

The system includes a drill string with a drill bit and a drilling mud circulation device, an underreamer attached to the drill string above the drill bit, and a tool body attached to the drill string, having a sensor for detecting downhole conditions, such as borehole diameter. The tool body is mounted above the underreamer and has a diameter smaller than the underreamer and drill bit.
