If a shock axially moves the hub assembly, only an axial motion occurs. Thus the system has a non-linear behavior. Pursuant to this invention, when a tilting disturbance occurs, and some of it is dissipated in a net axial movement at a different frequency, energy is subtracted out of the system with motion that is not linearly related to the disturbance was that created it.

摘要: A bearing system in which an axially stiff narrow gap fluid dynamic gas bearing is preloaded by an axially less stiff larger gap fluid dynamic bearing. As an example two fluid dynamic bearings are provided spaced apart along a shaft, one of the bearings comprising a fluid dynamic bearing, the other comprising an air bearing. The fluid dynamic bearing has a larger gap, while the air bearing has a relatively small gap. The overall working surface area of the air bearing may be twice as much or more than the working surface area of the fluid bearing.

摘要: A method and apparatus for a conical bearing is provided having a seal shield having an angle supported from the hub or sleeve which surrounds the shaft, and extending at an angle toward the outer surface of the shaft and spaced slightly away from the upper angular surface of the cone. As the cone and seal shield rotate relative to one another, fluid is drawn toward the lower inner region of the reservoir. However, due to shock or the like, some fluid may reach the radial gap between the end of the shield and the outer surface of the shaft, therefore, a ring is either incorporated into the upper end of the cone or pressed against the axial outer end of the cone, defining an axial gap which is smaller than the radial gap. In a preferred form of the invention, the ratio is about 1:3. When oil is introduced to either of the two gaps (typically by shock), it transfers or typically comes to rest in the axial gap, since the capillary attractive force increases as the gap size decreases; therefore, with the axial gap being smaller than the radial gap the oil will tend to transfer to the axial gap. As the seal is spun up as the shield and cone rotate relative to one another, centrifugal force acting on the oil in the axial gap transfers the oil radially away from the radial gap and into the reservoir defined between the shield and the cone. This transfer typically happens in two stages. First the oil in the radial gap is transferred into the axial gap, typically in the first few seconds of operation. The oil remaining in the axial gap then transfers into the reservoir volume due to centrifugal pumping.

As an example, the invention may utilize MEMS techniques in order to integrate a disc and motor of a disc drive as a common component.

摘要: Hybrid orbital fluid dynamic bearing motors are disclosed. The motors achieve improved efficiency advantages observed in fluid dynamic bearing motors containing an orbital ring. In addition, the hybrid orbital FDB motor has serial thrust bearings and traditional style journal bearings, which provide typically higher radial and angular stiffness not observed in previous orbital fluid dynamic bearing motor designs. Designs for centering orbital rings are also disclosed.

摘要: A bearing assembly having a shaft member having a bearing race and a piezoelectric member opposing the bearing race is situated so that when a voltage is applied to it, it expands against the bearing race so that a preload of the bearing is varied. The assembly includes a rotor having two outer bearing races opposing the shaft's inner bearing races. The contact angle for the upper bearing races is different than for the lower bearing races. In one embodiment of the present system, the piezoelectric member is disposed between the shaft member and the bearing race for varying the radial position of the bearing race. In another embodiment, the piezoelectric member is disposed for varying the axial position of the bearing race. In one embodiment, the system includes a hydrodynamic bearing assembly having a stator member having a hydrodynamic surface and a rotor member having a surface facing the stator member hydrodynamic surface. A piezoelectric member is attached to either the stator member or the rotor member for varying the width of said gap between said surfaces.
