In a single-sheet page printer for both-sided printing of recording media, a flattening device is provided for flattening the curled recording media resulting from pressure and temperature influences in the print fixing station of the printer. The flattening device deforms the recording media in the plastic domain so that the recording media are again lent a smooth and flat form. To this end, the recording medium is pulled over an edge by paper conveyor rollers opposite a pressing power exerted by spring elements and is thereby pulled taut and aligned. When the flattening device is arranged immediately following the fixing station, then it is proposed that the pressure roller be set back in the direction of the recording medium delivery relative to the position of the fixing drum. The geometrical design of a paper guide channel that immediately follows the fixing nip of the fixing means is such that the recording medium is thereby first curved in one direction and is subsequently curved in the opposite direction, so that a smooth and flat recording medium is ejected from the paper guide channel. Recording media of the greatest variety of paper qualities having different weights is flattened by the flattening device.

The method includes the following steps: supplying sheet-shaped material individually in succession through an input section to a first printing unit; printing an image pattern onto a sheet-shaped material with the first printing unit; sending the printed sheet-shaped material individually in succession from the first printing unit through an output section; supplying sheet-shaped material individually in succession through the input section to a second printing unit; printing an image onto the sheet-shaped material with the second printing unit; sending the printed sheet-shaped material individually in succession from the second printing unit through the output section; and in a simplex operating mode, alternating the supplying of sheet-shaped material to the first and second printing units by switching a first shunt disposed in the input section; and in a duplex operating mode, supplying printed sheet-shaped material, with printing disposed on a first side thereof, from the first printing unit through a first transfer printing transport path to a connecting channel to the second printer for printing transport path to the second printing unit for printing a second side of the printed sheet-shaped material; and in an emergency operating mode, wherein one of the first or second printing units is malfunctioning, shutting off the malfunctioning printing unit and switching the first shunt to supply sheet-shaped material only to the non-malfunctioning printing unit.

The brush is received in a shroud which includes a toner collection sub-chamber having an orifice exit to a suction system to return toner from the sub-chamber to the toner reservoir. The orifice is localized, providing a high volume air flow at the orifice opening. Oscillatory means act within the sub-chamber to insure that all toner within the sub-chamber is presented to the orifice.
