High interimage effects and edge effects can be obtained in multilayer color photographic recording materials if yellow DIR couplers of formula I are used therein, particularly if used in green sensitized or red sensitized layers. 2-Equivalent yellow couplers for the production of yellow dye images in color photographic silver halide materials have as splittable group a nitrogen-containing 6-membered heteroaromatic ring which is linked by the said nitrogen atom to the coupling position of the coupler molecule, contains a carbonyl group adjacent said nitrogen, and also contains one or two additional nitrogens as well as a fused-on aromatic carbocyclic ring. When the heteroaromatic ring contains two additional nitrogens, all three nitrogens are vicinal; when it contains only one additional nitrogen, the splittable group is a 1,3-quinazolinone-4 having at least one carboxy, with lower aliphatic alcohols esterified carboxy, nitro, methyl or chloro substituent.

Colored cyan couplers corresponding to formula II are eminently suitable for masking the yellow secondary density of cyan dyes. The reproduction of blues and yellows is thus improved. Yellow couplers corresponding to the formula ##STR1## wherein Y represents an aromatic, aliphatic or cycloaliphatic group,X represents hydrogen or a releasable group,R.sup.1 represents halogen, andR.sup.2 and R.sup.3 each represent an alkyl group having 1 to 20 carbon atoms,are readily soluble in oil formers and undergo coupling with a high color yield. They are resistant to heat and moisture and undergo color development to yield stable yellow dyes with an absorption maximum below 450 nm. They have a high absorption capacity in the near UV region and are virtually unaffected by fluctuations in the pH during processing.
