A sampler samples a receive signal received via a dedicated communication line. A data transfer rate adjuster measures a data transfer rate based on a number of start bit samples contained in the receive signal. A bit determiner makes a bit determination regarding the receive signal at the data transfer rate measured by the data transfer rate adjuster, to thereby acquire serial data contained in the receive signal. A transmitter sends, via the dedicated communication line, a transmit signal containing serial data sent by an MPU. An MPU communicator outputs to the transmitter the serial data sent by the MPU, and outputs to the MPU the serial data acquired by the bit determiner. The data transfer rate adjuster adjusts, when the transmitter sends the transmit signal multiple times at different data transfer rates, the data transfer rate based on the receive status of respective response signals thereto.

Disclosed are a frequency modulation apparatus and a frequency modulation method for generating an image clock that is used for turning on/off a laser beam that scans an image bearing member, such as a photosensitive drum. The frequency modulation apparatus divides, into a plurality of segments for each pixel, a main scan line on an image bearing member, and calculates auxiliary clock periods based on a reference clock period and variable-magnification coefficients corresponding to the segments. Then, the frequency modulation apparatus generates image clocks for the respective segments based on an initial predesignated period value and the obtained auxiliary clock periods. Furthermore, the frequency modulation apparatus includes a detecting device for detecting a difference between a reference value stored in a memory and an actual laser irradiation location, and corrects a shift in the laser irradiation location in accordance with the detection results obtained by the detecting device.

Cyclic pentapeptides are disclosed having the following formula (I)-Cyclo(-A1-A2-A3-A4-A5-)-wherein A1, A2, A3, A4 and A5 are amino acid residues. The pentapeptide has amino acid residues in positions 1-2-3 to form a &ggr;-turn, and amino acid residues in positions 3-4-5-1 to form a &bgr;-turn in combination with the &ggr;-turn. D-&agr;-amino acid residues are selected for A1, A3, and A5 and L-&agr;-amino acid residues are selected for A2 and A4. Compounds having &ggr;-turns and &bgr;-turns can be synthesized, regardless of the kinds of amino acid residues, and it is possible to synthesize compounds in which desired amino acid residues are introduced into sites of &bgr;-turn and &ggr;-turn based on their importance from the viewpoint of biological activity. The present invention is therefore available for design of compounds having biological activity.

A liquid crystal display device includes a liquid crystal display panel. The liquid crystal display panel includes a first transparent substrate having color filters arranged in a predetermined order, a patterned light blocking film formed between the color filters and first transparent electrodes formed on the color filters; a second transparent substrate having second transparent electrodes arranged to intersect the first transparent electrodes; a liquid crystal layer sandwiched between the first and second transparent substrates with the first and second transparent electrodes opposing each other and spacers dispersed between the first and second transparent substrates. The color filters and the light blocking film extend into a marginal area outside an area optically switchable upon application of an electric field on the liquid crystal display panel in substantially the same geometric pattern as within the optically switchable area. A plurality of dummy electrodes can also be formed in the marginal area on at least one of the first and second substrates, so as to oppose the transparent electrodes on the opposite substrate. The extension of the color filters and the light blocking film into a marginal area and the disposition of the dummy electrodes in the marginal area can be applied in one liquid crystal display panel, singly or in combination.

A switcher transmits, to an extractor/signal determiner, a converted current signal generated by a current-voltage converter when a converted current signal determiner determines that the converted current signal is generated by transmission of a current signal over a communication line, in the meantime, performs a switch-over so as not to transmit, to the extractor/signal determiner, a converted voltage signal generated by a voltage sensor. In addition, the switcher transmits, to the extractor/signal determiner, the converted voltage signal when a converted voltage signal determiner determines that the converted voltage signal is generated by transmission of a voltage signal over a communication line, in the meantime, performs a switch-over so as not to transmit, to the extractor/signal determiner, the converted current signal generated by the current-voltage converter.
