摘要:
A information storage medium that reproduces information that is recorded as marks and smaller than a resolution of an incidence beam includes a substrate and a super resolution layer or a thermal absorption layer directly arranged on the substrate without any layer therebetween to reproduce the marks by generating a thermal reaction at a portion where the incidence beam is focused. The information storage medium reproduces super resolution information by preventing the deterioration of reproducing characteristic due to the repeated reproduction of the information storage medium, when reproducing information recorded as marks smaller than a resolution. Thus, the recording density and capacity of the information storage medium can be increased.

A super resolution information storage medium capable of reproducing information recorded thereon as a mark with a size less than the resolution limit of an incident light beam, includes marks of varying sizes recorded thereon, excluding marks with a size in the vicinity of the resolution limit, where the resolution limit depends on the wavelength of a light source irradiating light on the information storage medium and the numerical aperture of an object lens focusing the light irradiated from the light source on the information storage medium. By adjusting the size of or excluding a mark with a size in the vicinity of the limit of the resolution that has a low C/N ratio, the C/N ratio is improved and the performance of super resolution information reproduction is improved such that high density and high capacity information storage medium can be implemented.

An optical disc includes tracking polarity information. The optical disc includes a clamping area, a lead-in area, a data area, and a burst cutting area (BCA). The BCA is present between the clamping area and the lead-in area and in which information regarding the optical disc is recorded, and the information is read before performing tracking in the data area. Accordingly, it is possible to obtain the tracking polarity information and/or reflectivity information without trial and error and directly record or reproduce user data in a data area of the optical disc.

A method of recording and reproducing on an optical recording medium having a user data area and a lead-out area, wherein the user data area and the lead-out area each has grooves and lands formed thereon. Wobbles are formed on at least one lateral surface of grooves of the user data area and the lead-out area, and configured such that wobble characteristics are made different between the user data area and the lead-out area. Different types of wobbles are formed on the grooves of either the user data area or the lead-out area, thereby preventing an optical pickup that performs recording/reproduction from deviating from the user data area. Also, in a multi-layer optical recording medium, a whole area of a recording layer is configured to have a same condition, thereby preventing deterioration in reproduction and/or recording due to a difference in light power transmittance of another recording layer.

An optical disc substrate with deep grooves having a depth of &lgr;/4n to &lgr;/2n, where &lgr; is the wavelength of a laser beam of an optical pickup and n is the refractive index of the optical disc substrate. The optical disc substrate includes a plurality of deep grooves having a predetermined depth, individual ones of the deep grooves having sidewalls slanted at an angle of &thgr;; and a plurality of lands having the same level as the surface of the substrate, wherein a depth D of the deep grooves for minimum crosstalk is determined by the following mathematical relation D=0.4022−0.4574×A+0.6458=A2, [1] where D=physical groove depth×{fraction (n/&lgr;)} A = NA · TP λ × 1 sin 2 θ , TP indicates the track pitch of the optical disc substrate, NA indicates the numerical aperture of an objective lens of the optical pickup, &thgr; is a slant angle of the deep grooves between a top surface of the lands and sidewalls of the deep grooves, &lgr; is the wavelength of a laser beam of the optical pickup; and n is the refractive index of the optical disc substrate.

An optical information storage medium includes a lead-in area, a lead-out area, and a user data area between the lead-in and lead-out areas and in which user data is recorded. Pits are formed in the lead-in area, the user data area, and the lead-out area, and a track pitch in all or a portion of the lead-in area is different from a track pitch in the remaining area of the optical information storage medium.

An optical disc is manufactured under a uniform condition by forming grooves and lands on the entire surface of the disc. The optical disc is configured to obtain a reliable reproduction signal, and the grooves and lands are formed on a lead-in area, a user data area and a lead-out area of the optical disc. Since the same manufacturing condition can be adopted in mastering discs, the yield can be enhanced and the manufacturing cost can be reduced.

An optical disc includes a plurality of recording layers, each layer having a lead-in area, a data area, and a lead-out area. A dedicated-reproducing area having a disc-related information zone, and a rewritable area are provided in at least one of the lead-in and lead-out areas of the optical disc. Accordingly, a reliability of a data recording/reproducing with respect to the optical disc is improved.
