Abstract: Various principles and methods are described herein to improve wireless communication in a user computing device. Certain aspects of the disclosure describe management of wireless transmissions relative to various regulations related to a specific absorption rate. Other aspects of the disclosure relate to detection of user proximity to a transmitting antenna. Other aspects relate to alternative strategies to improve wireless communication, such as selection of alternate antennas or baseband modems, or changes in device orientation.

Abstract: A wireless modem device. The device includes a plurality of transceivers, a plurality of antenna ports, a plurality of RF multiplexers, and a plurality of switches. Each transceiver is configured to process a radio frequency (RF) signal in a specific frequency band. Each antenna port is coupled to one of a plurality of antennas. Each RF multiplexer is configured to split an RF signal received via a common port of the RF multiplexer to one of frequency-specific ports of the RF multiplexer based on a frequency band of the RF signal and combine RF signals received via the frequency-specific ports into the common port, wherein the common port of each RF multiplexer is coupled to one of the antenna ports. Each switch is configurable by software to couple one of the transceivers to one of the antenna ports.

Abstract: Devices with radiating antennas are subject to various regulations designed to limit the absorption of radiofrequency energy in a human body part in close proximity to a radiating antenna. Various conventional strategies are available for management of transmissions to comply with these regulations; however, each of these conventional strategies has drawbacks, such as a negative effect on the wireless link. Various strategies are disclosed herein to comply with the requisite regulations while maintaining the wireless link. In addition, strategies are presented to select wireless link rates, taking into account limitations that may be in place to satisfy the necessary regulations.

Abstract: A method comprising: retrieving a predefined power threshold; determining a transmission power of a transmitting antenna, wherein the transmitting antenna is actively transmitting a signal; retrieving a predefined transmission time interval; determining that the transmission power exceeds the predefined power threshold; determining a duration of transmitting the signal; comparing the duration with the predefined transmission time interval; and switching transmitting the signal from the transmitting antenna to a further antenna when the duration equals the predefined transmission time interval.
