The first objective of the present invention is to provide a water-based polymer emulsion having a satisfactory storage stability and giving a coating film whose water resistance and adhesiveness are excellent. The second objective of the present invention is to provide the water-based polymer emulsion described above which has furthermore excellent characteristics for being used in a hair cosmetics. For the purpose of accomplishing the first objective described above, a water-based polymer emulsion according to the present invention is a water-based polymer emulsion obtained by emulsion polymerization of one or more silane coupling monomer, one or more lipophilic radical polymerizable monomer, and one or more hydrophilic radical polymerizable monomer, in which the polymer having said silane coupling monomer-derived reactive silyl group remaining therein is dispersed at a concentration or lower allowing the crosslinking between said silyl groups to be formed in a water-based dispersion medium. Also for the purpose of accomplishing the second objective of the present invention, a water-based polymer emulsion according to the present invention is a water-based polymer emulsion described above which is a cationic water-based polymer emulsion which is obtained by emulsion polymerization using a cationic emulsifier.

The object of the present invention is to provide a film composition which is solidified in water of which a painted film is rapidly solidified and also has proper usabilities for use as a manicure. To accomplish the object a film composition of the present invention comprises water insoluble film materials, and a solvent which dissolves the water insoluble film materials and soluble with water, wherein the solvent contains specified alkylene glycol ethers and ketones, and characterized by that the film materials are precipitated from the mixture of the remaining solvent and penetrating water in a painted film of the composition when the painted film is dipped in water.

The present invention provides a microgel having a mean particle size of 0.1-1,000 μm, the microgel being produced from a gel which is formed by use of a hydrophilic compound capable of forming a gel. An external composition containing the microgel provides an excellent sensation during use; i.e., the composition provides neither sticky sensation during use nor frictional sensation. Furthermore, even when a large amount of a pharmaceutical ingredient, such as a whitening ingredient, or a salt is incorporated into the composition, the viscosity of the composition is not lowered, and the composition exhibits excellent viscosity increasing property. In addition, the composition exhibits long-term stability, without inviting separation of water.

A microcapsule of the present invention is characterized in that it encapsulate oil droplets having average particle size of 0.01 to 3 &mgr;m and its capsulating agent is a hydrophilic polymer gelling agent. The main component of the capsulating agent is preferably a hydrophilic polymer gelling agent which hardens by heating and cooling, and, in particular, agar or carrageenan. In the making method of the present invention, a microcapsule can be made efficiently due to no loss in the inner oil phase, and its particle size can easily be controlled. The microcapsule is excellent in shearing-resistance, store stability. Also, if the fracture strength of the microcapsule is within a specific range, a microcapsule which releasing characteristic of encapsulated oil droplets when applied is immediately-, gradually- or non-releasing can be obtained. Further, when such a hydrophilic microcapsule is coated, the contraction in air, dispersibility to various medium, and elusion of encapsulated components in medium can be also improved.
