The multi-shouldered friction stir welding tool comprises an integral shank-pin unit having a plurality of pin portions on the shank-pin unit, where the plurality of pin portions for driving into a plurality of joints to perform a friction stir welding operation on the corresponding plurality of joints and, where a shank portion of the shank-pin unit is for attachment to an optional axial tension rod, each of the friction stir welding modules comprises a pair of shoulders that is connected to the shank-pin unit where each shoulder has a distal end and a proximal end, where the proximal end of each shoulder faces the pin portion of the shank-pin unit, whereby the shoulder and pin(s) rotate in unison, and a pair of split collars or a pair of nuts that is connected to the shank-pin unit and faces the distal end of each shoulder, where the plurality of friction stir welding modules are connected to each other whereby the modules rotate in unison to simultaneously make a plurality of parallel welds. A first component is GMBA welded to an underlying second metal component, by forming an arc between a consumable metal electrode and a surface of the first component, depositing metal from the electrode to the first component and producing a pool of molten metal which extends through the first component and into the second component. The molten pool metal solidifies into a weld that extends into the second component wherein the weld width at the interface between the components is at least equal to the thickness of the thinner of the first component and the second component. A torch for use in welding has a first embodiment for gas metal arc welding and a second embodiment used for hot wire gas-tungsten arc welding. Both embodiments include a torch housing having a first and second end. A wire guide tube is centrally disposed within the housing. An upper electrode contact tip, a lower electrode contact tip and a dielectric material disposed therebetween are positioned at one end of the wire guide tube. An inner power cooling assembly comprises a first cylindrical member concentrically disposed about the wire guide tube and provides electric power to the upper electrode contact tip. The inner power cooling assembly defines a first chamber within which cooling water is circulated in contact with the upper electrode contact tip. An outer power cooling assemblycomprises a second cylindrical member and is electrically isolating from the inner power assembly. The second cylindrical member is in electrical communication with the lower electrode contact tip and defines therewithin a second chamber within which cooling water is circulated. In the gas metal arc welding configuration, a gas supply assembly is included in the torch housing and comprises an outer gas tube circumferentially disposed about the second cylindrical member.

The present invention is directed to an improvement for an apparatus which utilizes a preheating step in which the wire heat content of a consumable electrode is increased by means other than the welding current. Thus, the invention provides in combination with at least a first source of electrical power for heating a consumable electrode, a first electrode contact tip having a bore therethrough, a second electrode contact tip having a bore therethrough and a dielectric element having a bore therethrough disposed between the first and second electrode contact tips. The bores are adapted to receive therethrough the consumable electrode for the application of electrical power thereto. The bore of at least one of the electrode contact tips is axially displaced relative to the electrode contact bore of the other electrode contact tip. The invention provides several embodiments whereby either one of the electrode tip bores or the bores of both electrode contact tips are axially displaced. By axially displacing at least one of the bores of the electrode contact tips, electric contact consistency between the consumable electrode and the electrode contact tips is maximized.
