A NOVEL ALTERNATING COPOLYMER COMPOSED OF THE GROUP (B) MONOMER CONSISTING OF AT LEAST ONE A-,B-OR A,B-MULTISUBSTITUTED CONJUGATED VINYL COMPOUND, AND THE GROUP (A) MONOMER CONSISTING OF AT LEAST ONE MONOMER SELECTED FROM THE GROUP OF OLEFINS, HALOOLEFINS, INTERNAL OLEFINS, POLYENES, ACETYLENES, AND CARBONYL COMPOUNDS OR THIOCARBONYL COMPOUNDS; THE UNITS FROM THE GROUP (A) MONOMER ALWAYS ALTERNATING WITH THE UNITS FROM THE GROUP (B) MONOMER. SAID ALTERNATING COPOLYMER IS PRODUCED BY CONTACTING AT LEAST THE GROUP (B) MONOMER OF THE TWO GROUPS WITH AN ORGANOALUMINUM OR ORGANOBORON HALIDE TO FORM A COMPLEX AND THEN CONTACTING THE REMAINING MONOMER WITH THE COMPLEX FORMED. WHEN MONOMERS OF BOTH GROUPS (A) AND (B) ARE PROPERLY CHOSEN, SAID NOVEL ALTERNATING COPOLYMER CAN BE USEFUL AS A MATERIAL FOR THE PRODUCTION OF FILM, FIBER AND MOLDED ARTICLES, AND AS AN ADDITIVE FOR THE PLASTICS PROCESSING.

AN ALTERNATING COPOLYMER COMPRISING UNSATURATED COMPOUNDS CONTAINING A SULFONIC ACID GROUP (MONOMER OF GROUP A) AND NON-SUBSTITUTED OR SUBSTITUTED CONJUGATED VINYL COMPOUNDS (MONOMER OF GROUP B) IS PREPARED FROM THE MONOMERS OF GROUP A SUCH AS VNYLSULFONIC ACIDS, ALLYLSULFONIC ACIDS, STYRENESULFONIC ACIDS, VINYLOXYSULFONIC ACIDS, AND ALLYLOXYSULFONIC ACIDS AND THE MONOMERS OF GROUP B SUCH AS ACRYLONITRILE, ACRYLIC ACID, THIOACRYLIC ACID, OR THEIR DERIVATIVES USING AN ORGANOMETALLIC HALIDE SUCH AS ORGANOALUMINUM HALIDE OR ORGANOBORON HALIDE OR MODIFIED CATALYST THEREOF. THE PRODUCE COPOLYMER IS USEFUL FOR SHAPING A FILM, FIBERS, OR OTHER MOLDING OR FOR MODIFYING THE MOLDINGS, OR USEFUL AS AN ION EXCHANGE RESIN OR A READILY DYEABLE POLYMER.

An acrylonitrile polymer is produced by subjecting a solution of acrylonitrile alone or together with less than 50%, by weight of the total amount of monomers, of at least one other monomer in an aqueous thiocyanate salt to the action of light having a wavelength range of from 340 mÁ to 500 mÁ. A photosensitizer such as ditertiarybutyl peroxide, benzophenone, benzaldehyde, benzoin, #-naphthaldehyde or azobisisobutyronitrile and a chain transfer agent such as mercaptopropionic acid may be employed. Suitable thiocyanates are those of Na, K, Ca, Pb or Ba or ammonium thiocyanate. The aqueous medium may contain an alcoholic hydroxy group-containing liquid. In the examples, acrylonitrile is polymerized alone or together with styrene, vinyl acetate or N- methylol acrylamide in sodium thiocyanate solution containing in some cases benzaldehyde, azobisisobutyronitrile, a sodium pyrosulphite/ acetic acid mixture or mercaptoacetic acid. The acrylonitrile-methyl acrylate copolymer in Example 7 is produced by a continuous flow process.
