The invention in this application relates to a control system for controlling the power or current in an H.V.D.C. link connected between two a.c. systems and is employed particularly to damp power oscillations developed in such systems which frequently occur after any large disturbances, such as a temporary line short circuit. In particular, the system includes apparatus for defining an output signal proportional to a change function of absolute phase angle phi of the alternating voltage in at least one of the a.c. systems, and a control circuit for controlling the converters in the d.c. link. The control circuit is responsive to a signal depending on both the output signal from the apparatus and a predetermined order signal whereby the d.c. link is controlled to have a component of variation proportional to the said change function.

A circuit for controlling the application of firing pulses to controlled devices, e.g. thyristors or mercury valves, in a static convertor operating in its inversion mode. In particular, it comprises control means for developing the firing pulses 'at. an instant corresponding to a predetermined position occupied by each cycle of a waveform derived from a combination of components which are functions of the direct current flowing in the D.C. side of the "invertor" at a time instant immediately preceding the firing instant and the voltage across the device at the said time instant. The circuit is inherently predictive in its action and the object fulfilled by this invention is to so control the firing instants that the margin angle (defined herein) is maintained substantially constant even under conditions of asymmetry.

In the transmission of direct current from a rectifier to an inverter one method of control has been to provide a constant current at the rectifier and a constant extinction angle at the inverter controlled by a fixed extinction angle order signal. Instability results with this form of control under certain operating conditions. In the present invention the tendency to instability is reduced by controlling the extinction angle of the inverter in accordance with the fixed order signal when the inverter output current is at least equal to a required level, but increasing the extinction angle when the inverter current is less than the required level. The extinction angle is increased under the control of an auxiliary order signal generated by a summing unit which sums a signal from a control circuit representing the actual extinction angle, the fixed order signal, and a signal from an amplifier dependent on the difference between the actual and required current levels.

The circuit comprises an oscillator for developing these pulses and having an output frequency dependent on an input signal which is a function of any difference between the actual and desired values of a selected quantity possesed by the A.C. or the D.C. system whereby to influence the pulse frequency and control the firing angle "alpha" of the controlled devices in such a sense as to reduce the difference towards zero.

A control system for first and second converters in a highvoltage DC transmission link includes first and second control units which supply control signals I'' and I'''', respectively, to the converters. The first control unit receives a main control signal I and periodically generates a coded control signal which is transmitted via a link to the second control unit. If this coded signal is error-free, a check signal is transmitted back to the first control unit via a link and the signal I'''' is updated. The signal I'' is also updated if the check signal is received by the first control unit or if the main control signal is less than the signal I'' when the first converter is operating as an inverter or greater than I'' when the first converter is operating as a rectifier.
