This image forming apparatus further comprises a central processing unit for converting print data received externally to video data suitable for driving of the engine and storing the converted video data in the main frame buffer memory, and a direct memory access controller for controlling the main frame buffer memory so that video data stored in the main frame buffer memory is transmitted to the auxiliary frame buffer memory until the second signal is output when a print start signal is input, at an initial stage, and the video data stored in the main frame buffer memory is transmitted to the auxiliary frame buffer memory as much as a set data transmission amount whenever the first signal is input, at a subsequent stage after the initial stage. Thus, as the video data can be continuously output to the engine in synchronization with the video clock signal until the print stop signal is generated, speed of print can be increased. The controller controls the power supply controller so that when print data is not received from the outside for a first period of time in the ready-to-print mode, the ready-to-print mode is changed into the power saving mode, and controls the power supply controller so that when print data is not received from the outside for a second period of time in the power saving mode, the power saving mode is changed into the power off mode. With the printer and power controlling method for the printer, power consumption of the printer can be reduced when the printer in the on state is not used for a long time.

The control unit outputs a control signal variably controlling an RPM (Rotation Per Minute) of the cooling fan based on the operation mode and a printing speed of the printing unit. A cooling fan driving unit drives the cooling fan at a different RPM based on the control signal input from the control unit. Accordingly, the printer and the method of driving the cooling fan of the printer are capable of shortening the warming-up time to increase an initial printing speed, preventing the printing unit from being overheated, extending a lifespan of the cooling fan, and reducing a power consumption.

Next, a carry value is obtained by summing the bit values corresponding to the number of converted sections of printing data with the previous bit value. Then, the carry value obtained in this manner is counted. The counted carry value is multiplied by a predetermined value, and the volume of toner consumed is measured using the resulting product.
