The apparatus constructed and arranged to simultaneously render on a display of pixels a main waveform display and a magnified waveform display is disclosed. The main waveform display is adapted to have displayed therein one or more waveforms and associated data on a first graticule with a background while the magnified waveform display is adapted to have displayed therein a magnified view of a region of the main waveform display on a second graticule with a background. The region of the main waveform display to be magnified is defined by a graphically-controllable selection window positioned over the main waveform display to encompass the region. Preferably, the operator-controllable selection window has a position and extent that may be graphically manipulated.

A quick measurement apparatus and method for invoking automated measurements in a signal measurement system. The system sequentially applies one or more predetermined automated measurements to each of a plurality of predetermined waveforms. The automated measurements, which are applied to each of the user-selected waveforms in response to a single respective measurement request, measure a respective predetermined extent of each of the selected waveforms. Preferably, each single respective activation request is generated in response to the performance of an associated single operator action. It is also preferable that the system is configured to enable a user to define the sequence in which the automatic measurements are applied to the selected waveforms. The signal measurement system further includes a graphical user interface for displaying the waveforms and the measurement results. Each of the measurement requests is generated in response to a corresponding selection of a display element on the graphical user interface. Alternatively, the signal measurement system also includes a front panel keyboard. Here, each of the respective operator actions includes a depression of a dedicated button on the signal measurement system front panel. Each depression of the dedicated button invokes one of the measurement requests.

The context data may include information regarding parameters of the test environment (e.g., test equipment or test bench set points and configurations, configuration information regarding the device under test, etc.). The context data may be provided in the form of standard textual data as well as user voice sequences to be recorded. The context data is associated with any stored test data or test setup data so as to be easily retrieved along with the retrieval of the associated data. The data are associated by any of several methods including file naming conventions, structured files, table lookups, etc. Use of present invention therefore avoids many problems inherent in prior manual processes in which context data may be lost, incorrectly recalled, or disassociated with the corresponding test data and test setup data.

A graphical user interface for use in a computer system is disclosed. The computer system includes an operating system responsive to one or more system calls. Each system call causes the operating system to process user inputs in a predetermined manner. In this aspect of the invention, the graphical user interface includes means for generating at least one dialog box request in response to a user input provided on the graphical user interface. The graphical user interface also includes a plurality of dialogs each constructed and arranged to control display of and interactivity with an associated dialog box opened on the graphical user interface in response to one or more of the dialog box control requests. A dialog box control system of the graphical user interface is responsive to a selected one of a plurality of dialog launch modalities, and is constructed and arranged to close open dialog boxes not having a predetermined relationship with the selected dialog box. The dialog box control system also controls the generation of the system calls to the operating system as well as providing the dialog box control requests generated by the graphical user interface to the plurality of dialogs. This enables the invention to provide an associated degree of display clarity and an extent of system interactivity associated with the selected dialog box modality.

An instrument screen display includes a unique marker that provides the correlation and navigation through the analog data. The marker tells the user which packet or symbol is being displayed in the analog trace. The selected line in the listing (listing row that is blue) and the blue line on the trace above indicate which packet is selected for the purpose of showing details and packet data in the other tabs in the listing window. In addition to correlation, navigation can occur from either display. This type of marker is an innovative approach to correlating and navigating the disparate data types displayed on a modern oscilloscope.

A measurement instrument's correspondence between channel controls and selectable trace color on a display is indicated by visual indicators placed proximate the groupings of controls for the different channels. The color of each visual indicator tracks that of the trace corresponding to the channel for that group of controls. In one embodiment a knob located within each group of controls selects a color. Each knob has on its shaft a wheel with colored regions, behind the panel, and only one color shows through a window. Changes in shaft position indicate electrically to the rest of the instrument what color to make the associated display. Another embodiment provides a group of three light emitting diodes (LED's) of primary colors, controls their relative intensities, and then makes their combined light visible upon the front panel, as a visual indicator. Also, small portions of the active region of the display may be covered by the source ends of an optical path for transmitting light. There is a separate optical path for each different visual indicator. The exit end of each optical path is that visual indicator.

A pulse management system configured to perform a plurality of pulse measurements on each of a plurality of pulses of an acquired signal and to store results of the pulse measurements in an accessible data structure. The pulse management system includes a pulse analyzer that searches the data structure for pulses of the acquired signal that satisfy operator-provided search criteria. Similarly, the pulse analyzer can sort the selected subset of pulses based on sort criteria provided, for example, by an operator. The pulse analyzer can provide the operator with a user interface environment in which the operator specifies the search and sort criteria and in which the pulse analyzer displays the selected pulses with their associated pulse measurement results. The operator can advance through the selected pulses in any manner desired to display different pulses together or separately. The pulse analyzer thereby provides an operator with the capability to gain insights into a large number of acquired pulses through the selection of individual pulses meeting desired characteristics or relative time of occurrence, through the filtering or selection of pulses meeting specified criteria, and through the arrangement of those pulses according to the same or different criteria.

A pulse management system for use by an operator that automatically performs measurements on a subset of pulses of an acquired signal stored in an acquisition memory, and generates an accessible data structure that stores characteristics of the chosen subset of acquired signal pulses, including pulse measurement results. The system searches the data structure for pulses of the acquired signal that satisfy operator-provided search criteria. In addition, the operator can sort the selected pulses in any desired manner by specifying a desired sort criteria. The system displays selected pulses along with the associated measurement results, and enables the operator to advance through the selected pulses in any mannerism to display different pulses together or separately along with the associated pulse measurement results. A method for analyzing pulses of an acquired signal is also disclosed. The method includes the step of generating a pulse data array having stored therein pulse characteristics of a previously acquired signal, followed by the step of analyzing the contents of the pulse data array in response to operator specifications.

A real-time annotation system and methodology for annotating measurement waveforms in a signal measurement system that includes a graphical user interface for displaying waveforms and measurement results on a signal measurement system display. Generally, the annotation system enables an operator to generate a graphical annotation label containing any desired data, and to graphically position the annotation label at any desired location on the measurement display, enabling the operator to positionally associate the graphical annotation label with a desired waveform or waveform feature displayed on the graphical user interface. The annotation system is constructed and arranged to enable an operator to graphically generate an annotation label containing operator-generated information and to graphically alter the position of the annotation label such that the annotation label is positionally associated with a desired feature of a waveform displayed on the graphical user interface. The annotation label may be implemented as dialog box, window or other display region in the graphical environment provided by the graphical user interface.
