摘要: A projector of multiple skewed light planes or sheets is located adjacent a vehicle to be protected and detectors are arranged to detect the penetration of the light sheets by an incoming object, with the time intervals between the piercing of the planes defining the path of the incoming object and its expected impact time. An array of bullet-firing barrels is arranged to project bullets in an iron curtain under control of a fire control module that fires a round in a barrel above the projected flight path such that the round impacts the nose of the object and disables it. It is thus the piercing of the skewed light sheets that provides information as to the impact point of the object as well as its time of arrival so that a round can be fired to intercept the object as it arrives at the iron curtain.

摘要: A method and improved apparatus for aligning a diffraction grating, as, for example, one used in tuning the output of a laser. The total angular misalignment .epsilon. between the incident and diffracted beams is a function of three angles: the tuning angle .theta.16, the angle of tilt .beta. between the plane of the grating 15 and the tuning rotational axis, and the angle .alpha. between the grating lines and the projection of the turning rotational axis in the plane of the grating 15. The present invention provides a method of aligning the diffraction grating so that the residual alignment error is very small over the desired range of tuning angle .theta. 16, by adjusting only .alpha. or only .beta. to zero at two reference tuning angles .theta..sub.0 and .theta..sub.1. Knowledge of the value of either .alpha. or .beta. is not necessary. For a CO.sub.2 laser tuned over the wavelength range 9.11 to 10.88 .mu.m, calculations show that the present method grating alignment results in a residual angular misalignment error .epsilon. of less than 60 .mu.rads, when .alpha. is close to 12,000 .mu.rads and .beta. is equal to 10,000 .mu.rads. Since adjustment of only .alpha. or .beta. is necessary in minimizing the total misalignment, an improved apparatus for aligning diffraction gratings consists of providing means for adjusting only one of the two angles .alpha. and .beta. in addition to the tuning angle .theta..

摘要: An automated detection system includes a robotic fluid handling system for performing a plurality of assays; a detection system for imaging the assays as they are performed; and a computer control, data acquisition, and data analysis system for controlling the operation of the fluid-handling and detection system and for collecting and analyzing imaging data. The automated detection system comprises a pipettor for simultaneously distributing a predetermined amount of a liquid and a signal-generating element to each of the plurality of wells; an excitation source for simultaneously exposing the wells to excitation radiation; a detector for simultaneously detecting signal emitted from each of the wells over a period of time comprising a single imager for optically imaging the plurality of wells simultaneously; and computerized controller for simultaneously coordinating the pipettor, the excitation source, and the detector. Further, a method for performing simultaneous assays includes the steps of simultaneously distributing a predetermined amount of a liquid solution to each of a plurality of samples, simultaneously exposing the wells to excitation radiation, simultaneously detecting signals emitted from the wells using a detector comprising a single imaging means, and simultaneously controlling and coordinating the distribution, excitation, and detection using a computerized controller.

摘要: A flash economizer employing an enclosed upright container has upper, intermediate and lower chambers for flashing pressurized blowdown effluent in the nature of moisture-contaminated steam. It is constructed to initially separate and remove pure steam in its upper so-called flashing chamber and to thereafter maximize, principally in the intermediate chamber, an indirect transfer of heat from the remaining heat-containing condensate or water to a clean effluent, such as make-up water. An upwardly spiraled tubing array positioned about and along the intermediate chamber receives the clean effluent and advances it in an upwardly spiraled counterclockwise path therealong, while the heat-containing condensate is directed in a downflow, counter or clockwise-spiraled path along the tubing array. The tubing array is carried by an enclosing support structure that defines a spiral downflow path for the heated condensate therealong and therabout. Enlarged inlet and outlet tubing members extend into and along the lower and into the intermediate chamber in a spaced relation with respect to each other, with the outlet or return tubing member extending along an inner periphery of the tubing array and along a substantially central supporting structure about which the array extends within the intermediate chamber. Downflow of heated condensate is proportioned to maintain a full spiral downflow within the enclosing structure along the tubing array while providing a central downflow along the inside of the central supporting structure.
