Techniques for supporting multimedia broadcast/multicast services (MBMS) are described. In an aspect, resources used for MBMS services may be provided with a multi-tier structure. In the first tier, resources (e.g., subframes) used for a multicast control channel (MCCH) for MBMS services may be signaled in a system information block (SIB). In the second tier, resources (e.g., subframes) for channels carrying data for MBMS services may be signaled via the MCCH. In one design, a base station/cell may determine resources used to send a MCCH. The cell may generate a SIB comprising information indicative of the resources used to send the MCCH. The cell may send the SIB in a broadcast control channel (BCCH). The cell may send the MCCH on the resources indicated by the information sent in the SIB. The cell may send other channels carrying data for MBMS services based on information sent in the MCCH.

A UE can monitor configured component carriers to determine channel qualities associated therewith. The UE can transmit carrier quality information that includes the channel qualities of the plurality of component carriers. In addition, the UE can identify a component carrier experiencing a loss of channel quality and notify a base station of the component carrier with poor channel conditions. In one aspect, the UE can incorporate additional information into a scheduling request. In addition, the UE can generate a CQI report that contains the carrier quality information. Further, the base station, when a loss of channel quality occurs, can retry transmission on different carriers. Moreover, the base station can employ information provided by the UE when selecting a component carrier for a transmission.

A wireless terminal is configured to monitor a control channel quality of a control signal over at least one control carrier. A radio link failure determination is then made based on the control channel quality of the at least one control carrier. In other embodiments, rather than basing the radio link failure determination solely on the set of control carriers, the wireless terminal is configured to monitor a control channel quality over at least one additional carrier, not included in the set of control carriers, in response to a link loss detected over each of the set of control carriers. For such embodiments, the radio link failure determination is then made based on the control channel quality of the additional carrier(s).

In one design, a base station may determine scheduling information for a plurality of MBMS services, generate a bitmap based on the scheduling information, and send the bitmap to convey the scheduling information. The bitmap may include a bit for each MBMS service, and the bit may indicate whether or not that MBMS service is scheduled. In one design, the bitmap may cover all MBMS services supported by the base station. In another design, a plurality of groups of MBMS services may be formed for all supported MBMS services. A group of MBMS services may be selected from among the plurality of groups, and the bitmap may be for the MBMS services in the selected group.

At a network entity, a first ID Assigned to a UE and possibly a salt value are transformed, e.g., based on a hash function, to obtain a second ID for the UE. An output message directed to the UE is generated based on an input message, the second ID, and the salt value (if present). The output message is sent via a common channel shared by the UE and other UEs. At the UE, a message is received via the common channel, and a salt value (if sent) is obtained from the received message. The first ID and the salt value are transformed to obtain the second ID, which is used to determine whether the received message is intended for the UE.

Techniques for dynamically selecting subframe formats in a wireless network are described. In an aspect, a base station may dynamically switch between different subframe formats to support communication for different types of user equipments (UEs). In one design, the base station may declare a set of subframes as multicast/broadcast single frequency network (MBSFN) subframes for first/legacy UEs. The base station may send signaling conveying the set of subframes as MBSFN subframes to the legacy UEs. The base station may dynamically select the formats of the set of subframes for second/new UEs, e.g., on a per subframe basis. The format of each subframe may be selected from a plurality of formats, which may include at least one regular subframe format, at least one MBSFN subframe format, and/or at least one blank subframe format. The base station may send transmissions in the set of subframes based on the selected formats.
