A Node B may send power information that may be used by a UE to determine a power per channelization code, POVSF. In one design, the power information includes a power offset between the power of a data channel, PHSPDSCH, and the power of a pilot channel. The Node B may determine PHSPDSCH based on the power available for the data channel, the number of available channelization codes, and a designated number of channelization codes. The UE may determine POVSF based on the power information from the Node B and the designated number of channelization codes. The UE may estimate at least one SINR of at least one transport block based on POVSF, determine CQI information for the transport block(s) based on the SINR, and send the CQI information to the Node B.

A channel quality indicator is received from a dual-stream-capable wireless communication device requesting a single-stream transmission at a first data rate. The first data rate is adjusted by an adaptive outer loop margin to obtain a second data rate. A data stream is transmitted to the wireless communication device using the second data rate. A positive-acknowledgement/negative-acknowledgement (ACK/NACK) is received from the wireless communication device. The adaptive outer loop margin is adjusted according to the received ACK/NACK.

Techniques for transmitting data with dynamic space-time coding are described. Dynamic space-time coding refers to the mapping of data across both space and time dimensions based on a mapping scheme that changes in a dynamic manner, e.g., a time-variant manner. A transmitter generates at least one data stream and performs space-time coding on the at least one data stream in a dynamic manner to generate at least two output streams for transmission from at least two antennas. The space-time coding may be performed in various manners. For example, each data stream may be space-time coded based on a respective set of space-time codes, e.g., by cycling through the space-time codes in the code set or by using a space-time code selected based on feedback from a receiver. The code set for each data stream may also be selected from among multiple code sets available for the data stream.

The method exploits redundant and/or a priori knowledge within a system to simplify the estimation calculations. In one embodiment, a covariance matrix is calculated and analyzed to determine if the channel parameters may be reduced for channel estimation. If not, all parameters are used, otherwise a reduced rank matrix is used for the calculation.

A user equipment (UE) may determine a transmit power per channelization code, POVSF, based on the available transmit power and a designated number of channelization codes, e.g., by uniformly distributing the available transmit power across all transport blocks and all of the designated number of channelization codes. The UE may estimate SINRs of multiple transport blocks based on POVSF, determine CQI indices for the transport blocks based on the SINRs, and send the CQI indices to a Node B. The Node B may send multiple transport blocks to the UE based on the CQI indices. The Node B may send the transport blocks (i) with the designated number of channelization codes at POVSF or (ii) with a second number of channelization codes at POVSF, with the transport block sizes being scaled based on the designated and second numbers of channelization codes.

Techniques for sending feedback information in a wireless communication system are described. In one design, precoding control indication (PCI), rank, and channel quality indication (CQI) for data transmission from a transmitter to a receiver may be determined by evaluating different hypotheses. A report may be formed based on the PCI, rank and CQI. The PCI may include a precoding matrix or vector to use for the data transmission. The CQI may include at least one CQI value for at least one transport block to send for the data transmission. The rank and CQI may be combined based on a mapping. For example, the CQI may include one CQI value and fall within a first range of values if one transport block is preferred by the receiver. The CQI may include two CQI values and fall within a second range of values if two transport blocks are preferred.

Techniques for transmitting data in a manner to support multi-user scheduling, multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) transmission, and interference cancellation are described. A base station assigns multiple time segments of a transmission time interval (TTI) to at least one terminal, maps data for each terminal to at least one time segment assigned to the terminal, and spreads the data in each time segment with at least one channelization code used in the TTI. A terminal receives an assignment of at least one time segment from among multiple time segments of the TTI, obtains input samples for the at least one time segment, and despreads the input samples with the at least one channelization code used in the TTI.
